South African Olympic champion Oscar Pistorius was formally indicted on murder charges in a Pretoria courtroom on Monday—what would have been girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp's 30th birthday. Pistorius, a double-amputee running champion, shot and killed Steenkamp in February, after he says he mistook her for an intruder, but prosecutors have alleged that it was premeditated. Ballistic tests leaked this weekend seemed to back up Pistorius's claim that he did not put his prosthetic legs on before the shooting, and the defense expected to claim he felt vulnerable and his actions were "reasonable for a person with a disability." Another leaked report this weekend showed Steenkamp was allegedly crouched behind the bathroom door at the time of the shooting, perhaps hiding. Before appearing in court on Monday, Pistorius and his family prayed at length, and Pistorius weeped during the indictment.
