The Daily Beast's Isabel Wilkinson on what the loud and proud trousers reveal. GET A WITNESS A point of contention in the George Zimmerman trial has been whether the self-appointed neighborhood vigilante or Trayvon Martin was on top during a fight preceding the shooting and subsequent death of the teenage boy. Today, John Good, a former neighbor who witnessed the altercation, described a scene where Martin was straddling Zimmerman. Good's testimony contradicts that of another neighbor given yesterday. Good was unable to corroborate Zimmerman's claims that Martin was slamming his head into the concrete sidewalk but that he heard Zimmerman crying out: "The person on the bottom, I could hear a 'Help,'" Good said. FOR THE WIN The New Yorker has taken the bold step of outing Bert and Ernie in the wake of the Supreme Court's ruling to strike down DOMA, featuring everyone's favorite Sesame Street characters embracing on its cover. Peru A tomb from a South American civilization that predated the Incas has been found north of Lima, Peru, archaeologists revealed at a press conference Friday. The 1,200-year-old Wari tomb, believed to be royal, was found buried deep in the ground, which is likely what kept it safe from grave robbers. Archaeologists said the tomb is "like a pantheon," with rows of mostly female human remains buried in a seated position and dressed in textiles and precious metals. Six skeletons were laid out flat and were possibly human sacrifices. The tomb also contained gold and silver jewelry, alabaster cups, and weaving tools made of gold. Brutal Get ready, West Coast, it's about to get toasty! A massive heat wave bearing down on the Western U.S. is expected to bring record-high temperatures to regions already known as "summer scorchers." Meterologists predict that Death Valley, California, will see temperatures reaching 130 degrees Fahrenheit, just 4 degrees shy of the world record of 134 degrees, set in 1913. Triple-digit temperatures are also projected for Phoenix and Las Vegas. CBS meteorologist Jeff Berardelli called it "a once-in-a-century-type heat wave in the deep Southwest." At these temperatures, certain fleets can fly, while others remain grounded until the temperature falls. | |
