MacGyver Challenge Winner: Use Old Gift Cards to Keep Spare Keys Safe in Your Wallet

By Walter Glenn

MacGyver Challenge Winner: Use Old Gift Cards to Keep Spare Keys Safe in Your WalletIn this week's MacGyver Challenge, we asked you to hack something using an old gift card. We received some great entries, but the winning hack shows us a create way to keep spare keys in your wallet.

Check out the description of the winning entry below and read about some of our other favorite entries.

Winner: Use Old Gift Cards to Keep Spare Keys Safe in Your Wallet

MacGyver Challenge Winner: Use Old Gift Cards to Keep Spare Keys Safe in Your WalletFor years, Bryan carried a spare house and car key in his wallet, foresight which helped him get out of jams on many occasions. He has used wallets in the past that have built-in spare key holders, but those typically have space for just one key and he found they limited his wallet selection too much. When he tried just tucking his keys into the compartments with his other cards, they had the unfortunate tendency to go flying once in a while. His simple solution was to create a key holder using two old gift cards. He taped the spare keys to the inside of the cards, then taped the two cards together. This not only keeps his keys firmly in his wallet, but also helps them blend in better.

Honorable Mentions

We got a lot of great entries and we'd be remiss if we didn't share some of our favorites. Here are some of the entries that really impressed us.

Use an Old Gift Card as a Luggage Tag

MacGyver Challenge Winner: Use Old Gift Cards to Keep Spare Keys Safe in Your WalletHundrup didn't want to buy luggage tags or use the cheap paper tags the airport gives away. Instead, he glued two of his business cards to either side of an old gift card and then punched a hole in the corner to make his own luggage tag. He attaches the tag to his luggage using something strong like old headphone wire. His tags are strong, easy to make, and best of all, free—so if he loses one in transit, no big deal.

Replace Your Flimsy Collar Stays

MacGyver Challenge Winner: Use Old Gift Cards to Keep Spare Keys Safe in Your WalletOur next entry also comes from Hundrup (of luggage tag fame, above). It turns out that old gift cards also work great as collar stays for dress shirts. Just snip them to the right size and shape, file off the rough edges a bit, and you have collar stays that are much stronger than the flimsy plastic stays that come with most shirts.

Create Your Own Smartphone Stand

We're not sure whether Bubbsdaddy needed a smartphone stand and settled on repurposing an old gift card or just had an old gift card and wondered if he could make something cool with it. Either way, we'd say he succeeded. Four snips with scissors and a little bending provides a clever little stand that you could make almost anywhere if you needed to.

A big thanks to everyone who took the time to send us entries! Be sure to check back every week for a new challenge. Number of comments
