Cheat Sheet - The Aryans Are Coming

Today: Prosecutors Seek Death Penalty for James Holmes , David Stockman on 'The Great Deformation' and Our Economic Doom , South Korea Prepares for Attack
Cheat Sheet: Afternoon

Beware

Texas's Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife were found shot and killed Saturday in their home, the third and fourth person to be killed since the beginning of the year in a series of shootings that appear to be connected to the Aryan Brotherhood. Whether or not the homegrown jihadists are behind the crimes, their increasing emergence from prison should strike fear in all of us. I should know—I was behind bars with them.

AURORA

Prosecutors are pursuing the death penalty for James Holmes, the man accused of killing 12 people and injuring 70 at a screening of The Dark Knight Rises. "For James Eagan Holmes, justice is death," the district attorney reportedly told the courtroom. Holmes's lawyers had offered to have their client plead guilty in exchange for a life sentence, but prosecutors rejected the offer, deciding instead to go to trial. Holmes's attorneys are expected to argue that he was legally insane at the time of the rampage.

WE'RE FINISHED!

Those new stock-market records? Just another bubble, but this one might well finish us. Great Deformation author David Stockman tells The Daily Beast's Daniel Gross where we went wrong, and who's to blame.

Brinkmanship

South Korea fully intends to retaliate immediately if the North's threats of attack turn out to be more than just talk. The country has even altered its rules of engagement to permit local units to respond to attacks without waiting for permission from the capital. As the United States contributes its own fighter jets to Seoul's military drills, North Korea claims that a nuclear war is imminent—despite not taking any real action to signal actual aggression. "If there is any provocation against South Korea and its people, there should be a strong response in initial combat without any political considerations," President Park Guen-hye said at a meeting with the defense minister and senior officials Monday.

CAMELOT

From first daughter to U.S. ambassador. Caroline Kennedy, the only living child of President John F. Kennedy's, is expected to be named U.S. ambassador to Japan. The 55-year-old Kennedy daughter is a lawyer and author of 10 books. She played a crucial part in President Obama's reelection campaign, making several appearances on his behalf in swing state New Hampshire and echoing the attack that Mitt Romney was the wrong candidate for women. She will replace John Roos, who has served as ambassador since 2009, and succeed other luminaries like Walter Mondale, Howard Baker, and Tom Schieffer.
