The APS state news agency has reported that "about 100" of 132 foreign hostages have been freed at a gas plant near In Amenas. The report, citing unnamed sources, also hinted at a chance of a "peaceful conclusion."

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay has called on the International Criminal Court to investigate war crimes committed in Syria. Meanwhile, a French journalist has been killed by sniper fire in Syria.

German planes set off to aid Mali troop shipments
German military transport planes have flown to Mali to assist French-led efforts to combat Islamist rebels. The aircraft will transport West African troops being scrambled after Paris embarked on an air offensive.

Russian doctors have been battling to save the eyesight of the Bolshoi Ballet's artistic director after he was the victim of an acid attack. Police suspect the incident may be linked to the ballet's notorious infighting.

Greek parliament votes to investigate ex-finance minister
Athens lawmakers have voted to investigate ex-finance minister George Papaconstantinou over allegations he hampered a tax probe. It is alleged the socialist politician removed relatives from a tax-evasion suspect list.

The level of bad debt in Spanish banks has surged to a new record as more than one in nine loans is likely to not being repaid. The rise in doubtful loans might raise the EU rescue bill for the Spanish banking sector.
