Dozens reportedly held hostage at Algerian gas field
A group reportedly linked to al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb has attacked a gas field in Algeria. They claimed to be holding "41 Westerners" hostage, saying they were responding to the military intervention in Mali.

Germany has said it is sending two transport planes to Mali to help shore up an initial battle against Islamist insurgents. French ground troops already in Mali were set to engage directly with the rebels Wednesday.

Democracy worldwide declined further in 2012, according to the latest annual assessment by the Washington-based watchdog group Freedom House. It says "modern authoritarians" have become sophisticated in abusing rights.

Germany's government has revised its 2013 economic outlook, expecting slower growth than predicted earlier, ahead of a strong rebound towards the end of 2013. It hopes faltering exports will be offset by domestic demand.
