French troops begin intervention into Mali conflict
France has begun an intervention in Mali to help stem a push by Islamist rebels. Nations feared that al Qaeda-linked militants who control the north would use the desert as a launching pad for international attacks.

Obama and Karzai announce military shift in Afghanistan
Barack Obama and Hamid Karzai have announced that the US military would shift to a support role in Afghanistan. The presidents had met to discuss the role of the 66,000 American troops serving in Karzai's country.

German carmaker Volkswagen has followed luxury auto makers Daimler and BMW in announcing record sales figure for 2012. Europe's unrivaled auto leader now produces one out of every four cars sold on the continent.
