MIT Probes Swartz Case The Massachusetts Institute of Technology is launching an internal investigation into its role in Aaron Swartz's persecution. Swartz, who was found dead on Friday, was facing 35 years in prison for stealing 4.8 million scholarly-journal articles and documents from JSTOR, which were stored on the MIT computer network. JSTOR chose to drop its charges against Swartz. In a statement on Sunday, MIT President L. Rafael Reif said that he has asked Hal Abelson, a professor of electrical engineering and computer science, to "lead a thorough analysis of MIT's involvement from the time that we first perceived unusual activity on our network in fall 2010 up to the present." Read it at The Chicago Sun-Times REVENGE 4. Islamists Vow to Destroy France Islamist forces in northern Mali vowed on Monday to retaliate for France's military campaign against them. The leader of the Movement for Oneness and Jihad in West Africa, an al Qaeda offshoot, said, "France has attacked Islam. We will strike at the heart of France." When asked where they would strike, he replied, "Everywhere. In Bamako, in Africa, and in Europe." The offensive killed 60 Islamists in the city of Gao alone on Sunday. France launched the offensive alongside the Malian Army on Friday to stop the Islamist insurgents who had threatened to advance on the capital of Bamako. Read it at AFP I-SAD 5. Apple Cuts Orders of iPhone 5 Parts Apple has cut orders for the components of its iPhone 5, and it's probably due to weaker-than-expected demand. The company has cut orders for iPhone 5 screens by about half of what it had previously planned to order for the January-March quarter. Sources say there have been cuts to orders for other components as well. Apple has recently been facing challenges from Samsung and other smartphone makers. During the third quarter of 2012, Apple held 14.6 percent of worldwide smartphone shipments, down from a peak of 23 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011. Citigroup analysts said, "It is unlikely that Apple is cutting orders in a 'great' demand environment."
