SHOOTING

Four people, including the gunman, were dead Saturday inside a suburban Denver home following a barricade hostage situation, which drew in a team of 40 officers. As Aurora recovers, another mass shooting shakes Colorado's third largest city. Carol McKinley reports.

HARROWING

"Encourage every rape victim and those they love to hold their heads up high and not be afraid of acknowledging what happened." Readers tell The Daily Beast their own stories of rape and sexual assault.

YEAH RIGHT

He’s still defiant. In a rare speech in Damascus, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad stood before a collage of images of the war’s victims, acknowledging the nation’s suffering. The embattled leader also pitched a peace plan made of a national reconciliation conference and a new government and constitution—though he said that such talks are only open to “those who haven’t betrayed Syria” and the organized opposition within the nation. As usual, he called for Syrians to fight back against the foreign-lead, criminal rebels.

RED LIGHT

Talk about sudden death overtime. After a marathon 16-hour negotiation session, the National Hockey League and the players union have struck a tentative deal to end the lockout. Given that the lockout lasted 113 days, hockey fans should expect about 50 games beginning Jan. 20 and with the Stanley Cup Finals in June. Players had just finished a vote to allow the head of the players union to dissolve the association if the vote hit a wall. Luckily, it didn’t get that far. The vote came at 5 a.m. Sunday morning.

OUTRAGE

The father of the Indian girl who was brutally raped and murdered want s the world to know her name. “My daughter didn’t do anything wrong, she died protecting herself,” he said, saying that her name would be an inspiration to sexual assault victims. Immediately, social media users picked up the call—a move that may pressure authorities to release her name. The girl’s name was trending at the top of India’s Twitter, though Indian newspapers refused to use it. The Mirror has her name here. India law blocks the naming of victims of sex crimes.
