TURNAROUND?

A top Russian official conceded on Thursday that the Syrian government is “losing control” in the spiraling civil war—a sign that one of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad’s closest allies may be pulling back. “Unfortunately, we cannot rule out the victory of the Syrian opposition,” said Mikhail Bogdanov, a deputy foreign minister. Meanwhile, Lebanon state news reported Thursday that 16 people had been killed and more than 25 wounded in a car bomb attack in the Damascus suburb of Qatana. At least seven of dead were reportedly children.

TRAGEDY

Jacintha Saldanha, the nurse to the Duchess of Cambridge who was found dead last week after being pranked, hanged herself by the neck in the nurses’ quarters, the coroner reported on Thursday. There were also injuries to her wrist. She left three suicide notes and as well as several emails, which officials say help explain why she took her own life. Detectives are talking to Saldanha’s family, friends and witnesses to last week’s tragedy to try to establish the circumstances that may have led to her death. Saldanha was found dead in her nurses’ chambers last Friday, a few days after treating the Duchess of Cambridge and being fooled by two Australian DJs trying to learn information about the duchess’s condition.

FUGITIVE WATCH

Welcome home, John McAfee. The eccentric software millionaire landed in Miami Wednesday evening after being denied asylum and deported from Guatemala. McAfee is wanted for questioning in Belize after his neighbor was murdered, and had led authorities there on a wild goose chase—which ended when he was arrested for illegally sneaking into neighboring Guatemala. McAfee was escorted by federal authorities and taken off the plane before the other passengers.
