TRUCE Both Israel and Hamas are claiming victory now that a hastily assembled ceasefire has gone into effect. Senior Hamas leader Khaled Meshal said on Thursday that Israel’s “aim was to deter us. The resistance showed them. This deterrence has failed. Israel has failed in all of its goals.” But the Israeli military disputed this in a statement, saying that the campaign had “accomplished its pre-determined objectives,” devastating Hamas’s infrastructure and killing seven senior militants. In any case, the new truce is still fragile. Israeli media reported that several rockets were fired into Israel from Gaza after the ceasefire went into effect. HUMBLING Once considered a potential presidential candidate, the congressman and son of the famous civil-rights leader resigned his House seat as he negotiates with federal prosecutors. The Daily Beast’s James Warren reports. VENGENCE The Pakistani Taliban has vowed revenge after India on Wednesday executed a Pakistani man for his role in the 2008 terrorist attack in Mumbai. Mohammed Ajmal Kasab, the lone surviving gunman from the attack that killed 160, was hanged on Wednesday in Pune, India. A spokesman for the Pakistani Taliban has said that the group would conduct attacks in India in response, though he did not provide any details. The spokesman also demanded that Kasab’s body be returned to Pakistan for an Islamic burial and criticized the Pakistani government for not requesting that the body be returned. POTUS In his Thanksgiving Day Address, President Obama urged Americans to use the holiday to come together after a “passionate” campaign season. “Thanksgiving is a chance to put it all in perspective—to remember that, despite our differences, we are, and always will be, Americans first and foremost,” he said, adding, “Today we give thanks for blessings that are all too rare in this world.” He also said that Americans are a “bold, generous, big-hearted people,” as the recovery efforts after Hurricane Sandy showed. “When our brothers and sisters are in need, we roll up our sleeves and get to work—not for the recognition or the reward, but because it’s the right thing to do,” he said. | |
