'CUMBERBITCHES'

The show doesn't return to the BBC for a third season until fall 2013, but Sherlock's fans are still freaking out about British lead actor Benedict Cumberbatch with a devotion typically reserved for boy bands and Biebers. What's behind their intense devotion—and equally rabid backlash? The Daily Beast's Kevin Fallon reports on the 'Cumberbitches.'

Four More Years

The Washington Post is standing by its man. In an editorial published on Thursday, the paper endorsed President Obama for a second term, arguing that the achievements of his first term outweigh "the disappointments." And they certainly don't go easy on Mitt Romney. "What kind of case has Mr. Romney made for himself?" the editors ask. "The sad answer is there is no way to know what Mr. Romney really believes. His unguarded expression of contempt for 47 percent of the population seems as sincere as anything else we've heard, but that's only conjecture."

NEWS FLASH

Barack Obama and Mitt Romney can promise all they want, but Americans should know better by now. The Daily Beast's Megan McArdle explains why it's delusional to ask one man to restore prosperity. Watch the video.

MOST WANTED

A suspect in last month's attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi was killed Wednesday by Egyptian security forces. Karim Ahmed Essam el-Azizi, a Libyan who had been living in Cairo, was among a group of militants with suspected links to al Qaeda. He was killed by a bomb that he was trying to use against the security forces, according to one official, who did not clarify what role Azizi was suspected of playing in the Benghazi attack. Police also found 15 bombs and an array of weapons in his apartment.

UM, WHAT?

Is cooking your victims a new trend or something? An NYPD officer was charged on Thursday in a plot to kidnap and cook his girlfriend—and maybe as well as 100 other women. Gilberto Valle, 28, an officer in the 26th precinct in Manhattan, allegedly used instant messaging to communicate with a co-conspirator, reportedly even talking about how to cook a person "over low heat, keep her alive as long as possible." Valle also allegedly accessed a law-enforcement database without authorization, reportedly developed his own database—with photos—of 100 potential victims, and had started staking out their homes and business. Valle was arrested Wednesday after a three-month FBI investigation. He is not known to have participated in any of the acts he talked about.

It Is OK to Politicize Rape?

Senate candidate Richard Mourdock's remarks that a pregnancy from rape is 'something God intended to happen' sparked outrage—but some charge that politicians are exploiting the issue to win elections. Reporter Allison Yarrow hit the streets to get New Yorkers' take on the debate.
