September 14, 2012 | | MIDEAST MELTDOWN Media for Christ, a California-based Christian nonprofit, reportedly took out a permit for a “Sam Bossil” production that appears to have become the incendiary Innocence of Muslims, the film linked to the violence in Egypt, Libya, and across the Middle East. The Daily Beast’s Marlow Stern reports. FURY U.S. embassies in Sudan, Tunisia, and Yemen were all under siege Friday as protesters angered by an anti-Muslim film that appears to have originated in the U.S. continue to demonstrate. Three people were killed and at least 28 were wounded during protests in Tunisia, according to state television. In Khartoum, Sudan, protesters attacked the German Embassy, while others reportedly broke into the U.S. Embassy. A U.S. Marine Corps security team is being sent to Yemen to protect the diplomatic mission there, CNN reported Friday. On the airplane, the pope called for an end to the import of arms in Syria and hailed Lebanon for keeping the peace between two different faiths upon arriving in the city. Meanwhile, one person was killed in Tripoli, Lebanon, at a KFC when armed protesters stormed the restaurant, Lebanese security forces said. TERROR THREAT The University of Texas at Austin and North Dakota State University will reopen their campuses at noon and 1 p.m. local time, respectively, after bomb threats at both schools forced evacuations Friday morning. At UT, a man claiming affiliation with al Qaeda told the school he’d planted bombs all over campus. He phoned the university at 8:35 a.m. and warned that the bombs would go off 90 minutes later. After the time passed, UT tweeted that no bombs had been found. North Dakota State University officials said all buildings had been cleared as well. | |
