Cheat Sheet - Penn State's Toxic Boys' Club

Today: Libya: Gaddafi's Son Captured, Obama Outpaces Rivals in Small Donations, Census Surprised by Rising 'Near Poor'

TOXIC

It's easy to make the argument that close-knit, insular groups of men can do bad things (think the Catholic Church). But in the Penn State scandal, would a female presence have made things any different? The Daily Beast's Jessica Bennett and Jacob Bernstein consider whether women could have saved the school from disgrace.

NABBED

Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, Muammar Gaddafi's son and onetime heir apparant, has been captured in southern Libya, according to Libyan officials. He was caught as he tried to cross into Niger in a convoy with his aides, said a spokesman for the Libyan fighters who found him, but the country's justice minister said his destination was not confirmed. Libyan TV posted a photo allegedly of the captured Saif al-Islam, sitting by a bed and holding up three bandaged fingers. Saif al-Islam is wanted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity.

FUNDRAISING

President Obama's approval rating might be in the tank, but he's doing surprisingly well with small donors—better than his rivals, and better than his 2008 record. The Washington Post found nearly a quarter of the money he's received has come from donors giving less than $200, a far higher percentage than in 2008. However, Obama is having more trouble with larger donors. Fewer than 6,000 supporters have given him $2,500 or more through September, compared with more than 8,000 for Mitt Romney.

SCRAPING BY

One in three Americans is in poverty or just above it, according to census data to be released Monday. The new report, calculated at the request of The New York Times, accounts for people with incomes less than 50 percent above the poverty line—another 51 million people, for a total of 100 million barely scraping by or not able to at all. "These numbers are higher than we anticipated," says the bureau's chief poverty statistician. Forty-nine percent of the near poor live in the suburbs, nearly half are non-Hispanic white, 18 percent are black, and 26 percent are Latino. Twenty-eight percent work full-time, year round.

FAILED

With only 72 hours until the deadline to introduce a proposal to cut $1.2 trillion from the U.S. federal deficit, the "supercommittee" charged with the task is just about ready to admit defeat. Republicans made a late offer, which Democrats rejected because it was heavily skewed toward spending cuts rather than new revenue. That offer, orchestrated by John Boehner himself, included even fewer taxes than a previous GOP plan. The divide was underscored Friday afternoon when the House narrowly rejected a balanced budget amendment to the constitution.
