A Taste of Spain: A Recipe for Almendrados

This overview of Spain – with facts about the country and a recipe, too – was prepared by Jared M. McDaniel while a Computer Science student in the College of Science and Technology at Southeastern Louisiana University.

Introduction

Spain joined the European Union in 1986. Its current form of government is Parliamentary Monarchy. Located at 40 00 N and 4 00 W, Spain is the closest European country to Africa. The food I have chosen to make, that is very popular in Spain, is Almendrados (Spanish Almond Cookies).
Country Information

·      Geographic Facts
Here are three geographic facts about Spain:
1.            Spain is literally the second highest country in Europe. It has an average altitude of 2,133 feet.
2.            Spain has more land covered by vineyards than any other country in the world.
3.            Spain is a little bit more than twice the size of United States’ Oregon.

·      3 “Serious” Facts
Here are three serious facts about Spain:
1.            Spain’s official name is “The Kingdom of Spain”.
2.            About 94% of Spain’s population is Catholic. Also, there is freedom of religion in Spain.
3.            Spain is made up of 17 autonomous regions

·      3 “Fun” Facts
Here are three fun facts about Spain:
1.            Spain’s capital, Madrid, is located in the direct center of the country.
2.            Spain is geographically five times bigger than the United Kingdom, but only has two thirds of its population.
3.            Spain produces about 44% of the world’s olive oil.

·      A “Potpourri” Item
Here is an unusual fact (or two or three) about Spain:
1.            In Spain, there is no such thing as the tooth fairy. People from Spain are used to a tooth mouse named Ratoncito Perez.
2.            In Spain, people eat lunch around 2 P.M. and dinner around 9-10 P.M.
3.             Team sports are not a part of school programs, so they join private clubs.

Food Information

·      Recipe
§  2 cups of finely chopped blanched almonds
§  2 cups of egg whites at room temperature

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Lightly toast almonds; set aside. Beat egg whites until stiff but not dry. Gradually add sugar, beating constantly. After sugar is added, beat 5-8 minutes. Fold almonds and vanilla. Place by spoonfuls or shape into rings on greased cookie sheet. Bake 17-20 minutes or until cookies just begin to color. These measurements serve 36.

·      My Kitchen Story

Let’s start off by saying I have no cooking skills whatsoever. After I completely ruined the first batch, I decided to get my mom to help me. The ingredients aren’t hard to find, and the instructions are very easy to follow. In the end, it really wasn’t too hard to make, especially since I had help! I hope the class enjoys the Almendrados.
