| | October 19, 2011 | | DEBATE After a particularly feisty GOP debate in Las Vegas last night, most commentators say Mitt Romney, once again, came out on top. Herman Cain quickly found himself being pummeled even as his rivals preceded their punches with words of praise, and his “read my plan” defense was strikingly weak. But after those opening moments, writes The Daily Beast’s Howard Kurtz, it was Mitt Romney who took over the event with a series of toe-to-toe exchanges in which he stood his ground and refused to be talked over. Plus, Michelle Goldberg on Bachmann’s populist comeback moment, video highlights, and more. CUFFED It’s not just the stars who are joining the Occupy Wall Street movement: feminist author Naomi Wolf was arrested on Tuesday night when she joined protesters at an event in downtown New York that Governor Cuomo was attending. While the others were demonstrating against Cuomo’s refusal to reinstate the “millionaires tax," the bestselling author of The Beauty Myth reportedly told the crowd they didn’t need a permit to use a megaphone. Police had said that protesters couldn’t be outside the event without a street-activities permit. WORLD At least 26 Turkish soldiers and police officers died Wednesday after Kurdish rebels launched simultaneous attacks in southeastern Turkey. The Turkish government responded by sending warplanes and ground soldiers into Iraq to target the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). The border crossing may not turn into a diplomatic crisis, however, as the Iraqi government has agreed to let Turkey cross the border for “hot pursuit” operations. BUSINESS For the first time in years, Apple earnings and revenue have come in short of quarterly expectations: The company came about $600 million and $1.1 billion short in each, respectively. The company blamed the shortfall on anticipation over the new iPhone 4s, saying consumers began holding off on purchasing new iPhones weeks ago once they knew a new model would debut this week. Still, it’s probably not the way new CEO Tim Cook wanted to start his tenure. He can still, however, point to strong growth: Revenue, despite missing the mark, was nevertheless up 39 percent to $28.3 billion. CRAZY Police in Ohio have killed 30 exotic animals after 48 of the creatures—including lions, cheetahs, bears, and wolves—escaped from a private zoo. So far, there have been no injuries to the public, but four school districts canceled classes Wednesday as the remaining animals are hunted down. The owner of the animals, Terry Thompson, was found dead, having opened all the animals’ cages. While police haven’t said how he died, they did say they had to shoot several animals just to get to his body. Some other animals that he kept, like chimpanzees and orangutans, were still in their cages. | |
