EXCLUSIVE

Texas Gov. Rick Perry, battling for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, has distanced himself from the anti-Mormon rhetoric of a prominent Baptist minister who has endorsed his bid. But emails obtained by The Daily Beast show an operative with close ties to Perry's campaign engaged in cheerleading against the faith of rival Mitt Romney—and stressing the political importance of "juxtaposing traditional Christianity to the false god of Mormonism." McKay Coppins reports.

CASH

One month after it began, Occupy Wall Street has some money on its hands: The movement has nearly $300,000, plus storage space in lower Manhattan filled with donated supplies. The money has been raised mainly through contributions on the movement's website and through people who give in person at Zuccotti Park. The group, meanwhile, has designated a demands committee to debate whether or not the group should issue concrete demands. Any proposals would have to be debated before the group's general assembly and would require two-thirds approval for passage.

STRATEGY

It's game time. President Obama's reelection campaign will focus on a few key states in order to gain a majority in the Electoral College. On Monday, Obama will embark on a three-day bus trip through North Carolina and Virginia, both states he carried in 2008. Later he will travel to the Mountain West to Colorado, Nevada, and New Mexico. Focusing on these regions is meant to reduce Obama's need to win Ohio and Florida, both states which may prove difficult for him to carry this time around. Campaign manager Jim Messina said, "We're going to run a series of very focused, local campaigns. We're going to run a different kind of campaign in Nevada than we do in Florida."

AFRICA

After the recent kidnappings of Western tourists by Somali militants, Kenyan troops have crossed the border in Somalia, targeting the Islamist group al Shabab. Eyewitnesses say at least 25 armored Kenyan vehicles were seen in the Somali town of Dhobley, while unidentifiable warplanes struck two al Shabab bases in southern Somalia. Al Shabab has vowed to fight off the Kenyan attackers, while Somalia's diplomat at the United Nations called the move "a very serious territorial intrusion by a foreign country."

SPORTS

Racecar driving lost one of its greats Sunday when Dan Wheldon died in a 15-car pileup in a crash at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The 33-year-old Englishman "was remarkably less full of himself than most athletes who had accomplished things on his level," Bill Dwyre writes in the Los Angeles Times. He was the father of an infant and a 2-year-old son. The accident that killed him appears to have been caused by a bump between Wade Cunningham and JR Hildebrand. "The coincidence of that is clear," Dwyre writes. "Hildebrand was the driver who crashed on the last lap of this year's Indy 500, allowing Wheldon to flash past and lead the race for the last 912 feet."
