CHEAT SHEET
MUST READS FROM ALL OVER
LEGACY
1. The Defense Rests
Aboard the Pentagon jet on his last foreign trip as secretary of
defense, Robert Gates takes a moment to peer across the American
horizon. But the view is dire: The U.S. is in danger of losing its
supremacy on the global stage, he tells John Barry and Tara McKelvey in
this week's Newsweek.

MISTAKE
2. Libya: NATO Strike Killed 7 Civilians
Libya officials said Sunday that NATO forces killed seven civilians in
airstrikes, including two toddlers, in an alleged bombing of a house in
a residential district of Tripoli. The incident came only a day after
NATO admitted to accidentally bombing a line of cars belonging to the
rebels, mistaking them for Libyan leader Col. Muammar Gaddafi's forces.
NATO officials said it destroyed a surface-to-air missile site in
northern Tripoli and is investigating the possible civilian casualties.
This wouldn't be the first time NATO has accidentally struck civilians,
but it also wouldn't be the first time Libyan officials have falsely
claimed they did: two weeks ago, Libyan officials were accused of
telling reporters that a child hurt in a car crash was the victim of a
NATO attack.

DRAWDOWN
3. U.S.: Al Qaeda Is Crippled
Mission accomplished? Top U.S. officials say that al Qaeda in
Afghanistan and Pakistan has become so crippled and ineffective that a
rapid pullout of American troops is on the table. Thirty top insurgents
identified by U.S. intelligence have been winnowed down to 10 in the
last year and half, officials said, thanks to drone strikes and other
secret missions. Intel gathered at the compound of Osama bin Laden
reportedly confirms that the terror network is in disarray and not in a
strong position to organize attacks. The military, however, is pressing
Obama to remove only a few thousand troops this year.

DISASTER
4. 7 States Face Extreme Fire Risk
The weather isn't making things any easier for firefighters battling
blazes across Arizona. The National Weather Service has issued a
red-flag warning for most of Arizona, all of New Mexico, much of north
Texas, and parts of Oklahoma, Colorado, Kansas, and Utah. All the states
will face high heat, low humidity, and strong winds of 30 to 50 mph. The
Arizona fire that started on May 29 has now burned 500,409 acres. So far
this year, 3.1 million acres have been burned, almost as much as were
burned in all of last year. A cause of the fires has not been
determined. Sen. John Kyl of Arizona said trees should have been cut
down in advance. Sen. John McCain blamed illegal immigrants for starting
the fires, but he provided no evidence, prompting rebukes from
civil-rights leaders.

CRISIS
5. Turkey to Aid Fleeing Syrians
Turkey has begun extending aid to refugees in Syria as thousands of
refugees amassed on the Syrian side of the Turkish border remain
undecided about crossing. It is the first time Turkish authorities, who
have already sheltered more than 10,000 Syrian refugees in tent cities
on Turkish territory, have launched cross-border aid. The refugees live
in the open air or in makeshift shelters of branches and plastic sheets,
surviving on scarce food and water. Many come from Jisr al-Shughur, the
site of the latest crackdown by Syrian troops. Turkish Foreign Minister
Ahmet Davutoglu said his country would keep its borders open to Syrians
fleeing the violence.
