The idea for Xamarin was born after Attachmate, which bought Novell for $2.2 billion in November 2010, began laying off Mono developers in May, according to de Icaza. READ MORE >> Java Use Increases Among Developers Worldwide A new survey from Evans Data indicates that developer use of Java grew in all regions last year, particularly in the Asia-Pacific area, where 68 percent of developers use it at least some of the time. Evans Data analysts said a driving force behind the increased Java use was the increasing importance of smartphones as a development target. Java is well-suited for most major platforms, from Android and BlackBerry to Symbian and cross-platform Web development, they said.
