At Microsoft's TechEd 2011 conference, conversation focused on how the vendor's applications and platforms work across the cloud and the myriad devices cropping up for use by consumers and businesses. Microsoft officials introduced the next version of Visual Studio, called vNext, to build and run apps across various devices and cloud scenarios.

Microsoft Plays Up Private, Public Clouds at TechEd 2011
The rapid growth in the adoption of virtualization is setting up the tech industry for a much larger inflection point, cloud computing, in both public and private deployments, according to Microsoft officials. Microsoft is looking to fuel that trend and is getting help: NetApp and Cisco have joined Microsoft's Hyper-V Cloud Fast Track program, designed to streamline the delivery of private clouds.

Mono Project Founder's New Company: Xamarin
Miguel de Icaza, who founded the Mono Project, is launching a new venture called Xamarin to develop products based on Mono, an open-source project designed to enable Microsoft .NET applications to run cross-platform and to bring better development tools to Linux developers. The idea for Xamarin was born after Attachmate, which bought Novell for $2.2 billion in November 2010, began laying off Mono developers in May, according to de Icaza.

Java Use Increases Among Developers Worldwide
A new survey from Evans Data indicates that developer use of Java grew in all regions last year, particularly in the Asia-Pacific area, where 68 percent of developers use it at least some of the time. Evans Data analysts said a driving force behind the increased Java use was the increasing importance of smartphones as a development target. Java is well-suited for most major platforms, from Android and BlackBerry to Symbian and cross-platform Web development, they said.

Serena Software Enhances Its ALM Suite
Serena is hitting new technology and customer milestones in its Orchestrated Application Lifecycle Management strategy, which is designed to apply process automation to the application delivery supply chain. The initiative enables developers to work more effectively by reducing the problem of siloed project teams working with multiple development tools and methodologies. Serena's new Orchestrated ALM dashboard gives developers greater insight into the development processes.
