It's official: Prince William and Kate Middleton are man and wife. The Archbishop of Canterbury pronounced them married at 11:20 am BST. In their vows, Kate followed in Diana's footsteps and took out the line of promising to "obey" her husband, promising to instead "love, comfort, honor and keep" William. Prince Harry carried out his big duty, handing off the ring to his brother without a hitch. Get the latest updates from our blog of the royal wedding at Westminster Abbey. Three hundred people have now been reported dead in the series of powerful storms that ravaged several Southern states Tuesday and Wednesday. The tornadoes that caused most of the damage may have been among the largest and strongest ever recorded. "There's a pretty good chance some of these were a mile wide, on the ground for tens of miles and had wind speeds over 200 mph," said Harold Brooks of the National Severe Storms Laboratory in Norman, Okla. The National Weather Service Storm Prediction Center said they received 137 tornado reports on Wednesday, with 104 coming from Alabama and Mississippi. President Obama, who has pledged federal aid in the recovery, is scheduled to stop in Alabama today on his way to the Shuttle launch in Florida.
A huge crowd is expected at the space shuttle Endeavour's final launch today, including President Barack Obama and Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, whose husband, Mark Kelly, commands the shuttle. But it will be a bittersweet moment for many NASA officials and residents of the Florida towns that have supported them. After Endeavour, the launch of Atlantis in June will mark the end of the shuttle program, and of NASA's ability to send people into space. Giffords herself was a strong critic of Obama's plan to privatize human spaceflight when he unveiled it two years ago, and some officials now hope that the drama of her recovery and her visit to the Endeavour launch will help rekindle interest in the agency's mission, but are wary of exploiting her appearance. The launch also marks the beginning of a time of uncertainty for the residents of the Florida towns that have supported the space program, with shuttle-worker layoffs already begun and the prospect of thousands more looming.
They may have been educated at St. Andrew's, but Prince William and Kate Middleton honored another college town with their titles. As per royal tradition of taking a title upon marriage, they became the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. The title dates back to the early 18th century during the Stuart rule, and the title has been extinct since 1981 when the last Duke of Cambridge died without an heir. The Queen also gave William the titles of Earl of Strathearn and Baron Carrickfergus, titles which Kate also came into when they were married. Traditionally, the Queen gives titles to royal men when they are married.
In the midst of forming a new government after the toppling of President Hosni Mubarak, Egypt's officials say they are implementing new foreign policies to better reflect their citizens' wishes. But their new direction may not sit well with the West: On Wednesday, Egypt made a deal to reclaim influence in Gaza in attempt to reconcile its secular Palestinian party Fatah and its Hamas rivals. In doing so, they are seeking to reclaim influence in an area that they lost during the 1979 peace treaty with Israel. "Egypt is resuming its role that was once abdicated," said Ambassador Menha Bakhoum, spokeswoman for the Foreign Ministry. The changes will likely shake up the balance of power in the Middle East, allowing Iran free access to Israel. An Israeli official said his country is troubled about the "rapprochement between Iran and Egypt" and the renewed friendship between Egypt and Hamas. "These developments could have strategic implications on Israel's security," said the anonymous official. "In the past Hamas was able to rearm when Egypt was making efforts to prevent that. How much more can they build their terrorist machine in Gaza if Egypt were to stop?" Egypt's security forces protected Israel at the border with Gaza, where arms and other weapons were often smuggled to Hamas foes through tunnels.
