2. Syrian Ambassador's Wedding Invite Pulled

This would have been awkward. Syrian ambassador Dr. Sami Khiyami's
invitation to the royal wedding was pulled at the last minute in light
of the Syrian government's brutal crackdown on protesters. Kevan Jones,
the shadow defense minister, warned the royal family of the diplomatic
damage that would be done by the "horrific spectre of killing on the
streets of Syria while the Syrian ambassador is in Westminster Abbey for
the royal wedding." Labour politicians objected especially strenuously,
saying it "bordered on the grotesque" that Khiyami would be invited
while former Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown were not. The
Foreign Office called Khiyami to withdraw his invitation this morning.
Asked if he was surprised, Khiyami said, "I wouldn't say surprised," but
the whole thing is "a bit embarrassing." Up to 450 pro-democracy
demonstrators have been killed in Syria in recent weeks.

2. Tornadoes Kill 178 in South

Brutal storms continued to sock the South on Wednesday, killing at least
178 people throughout the region. Alabama took most of the impact; at
least 128 of the deaths occurred in that state, which was hit with a
mile-wide tornado that tore through the college of town of Tuscaloosa.
It then passed just north of Birmingham. Over 300,000 people are without
power now, and Alabama has declared a state of emergency. Eighteen
deaths were recorded in Mississippi, 11 more in Georgia, and one each in
Virginia, Arkansas, Tennessee.

3. Obama Talks Birthers on 'Oprah'

The topic must have been unavoidable. On the same day he made his birth
certificate available, President Obama sat down with Oprah Winfrey and
talked about what led him to make the surprise move. "I said to my team,
look, even though this is not usually what the state of Hawaii
does…let's ask them for a special dispensation where they will go ahead
and provide us with the original to see if we can put this to rest."
When Winfrey asked what he had thought of the conspiracy theories, Obama
cheekily replied, "Can I just say I was there, so I knew. I knew I had
been born. I remembered it." Politico says, meanwhile, that Obama's
decision to release his birth certificate was a personal one: He just
wanted to shut this down so he didn't have to deal with this any more,"
a source says. Another White House official says, "Allowing the GOP
primary to devolve into birther mania probably would be better, but the
president felt strongly that this was bad for the country."

4. Hundreds Resign from Syria's Ruling Party

After weeks of violence against civilians, is Syria's government
beginning to crack? More than 230 people resigned in protest from
President Bashar al Assad's Baath Party, with about 200 of the
resignations coming from the region that includes the besieged city of
Daraa. The other 30 resignations came from the coastal city of Banias;
the resigning members said in a letter, "Considering the breakdown of
values and emblems that we were instilled with by the party and which
were destroyed at the hand of the security forces… we announce our
withdrawal from the party without regret."

5. Berkshire Hathaway: David Sokol Misled Warren Buffett

Berkshire Hathaway took a much harsher tone toward David Sokol, the
former executive accused of insider trading, than Warren Buffett
previously had. A report from Berkshire's directors said Sokol's
disclosures about stock purchases were "misleadingly incomplete" and
"violated the duty of candor" he owed the company. They said they may
also take legal action against Sokol, whose personally profited by $3
million after Berkshire purchased chemical-maker Lubrizol in March.
Sokol's lawyer claims, however, that Sokol told Buffett about his
personal stake in Lubrizol before recommending that Berkshire Hathaway
purchase the company.
