HIS MAN IN UKRAINE
Igor Strelkov, the rebel commander in Ukraine many people hold responsible for the MH17 atrocity, is sending a thinly veiled warning to the Kremlin that he won't go down alone. Anna Nemtsova reports from rebel-held territory.
SMALLEST VICTIMS
No place is more emblematic of the slow, grinding destruction of life in Gaza—and of hope—than the maternity ward in Shifa hospital. Jesse Rosenfeld writes that as the Israeli offensive cuts off electricity, the very youngest Palestinians pay with their lives.
SPREADING

Thousands of protesting Palestinians marching from Ramallah to East Jerusalem clashed with Israeli forces on Thursday night, as violence spread to the previously peaceful capital. Demonstrators threw rocks, firebombs, and fireworks at Israeli security and border police, who in turn used riot-control methods and live ammunition. At least one protester was killed, while three others were left in critical condition, and 200 were injured. Twenty-seven Israeli officers were injured. Palestinians were marching against the two-week campaign in Gaza. Israel is deploying 3,000 to 4,000 police in Jerusalem, as riots are expected to break out there Friday.

NIGHTMARE

Eleven men are trapped in a small, wildcat gold mine in southern Honduras after a cave-in on Wednesday. Emergencies Commission director Moises Alvarado said at one point that eight of the men had been rescued and taken to a hospital, but later withdrew the report, saying he had been given incorrect information by a firefighter at the site. All 11 men are still trapped and more than 300 Red Cross volunteers, locals, and firefighters are digging by hand in an effort to reach the miners. No heavy machinery is being used because the mien is unstable and could collapse further.

HE WOULD KNOW

This guy knows torture when he sees it. Senator John McCain called the two-hour execution of a death row inmate in his home state "torture." Joseph R. Wood III's drawn-out lethal injection left him gasping for air, according to those on the scene in Arizona on Wednesday. "I believe in the death penalty for certain crimes. But that is not an acceptable way of carrying it out. And people who were responsible should be held responsible," said McCain, who was tortured for years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam. Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer expressed concern with the length of the execution, but said "justice was carried out."
