Cheat Sheet - China’s Last Foot-Binding Survivors

Read This, Skip That ....

July 02, 2014
PAIN OF THE PAST
The survivors of foot-binding had long been buried as one of the traces of "Old China." Photographer Jo Farrell has determined to make sure these women, some as old as 100, are not forgotten. Nina Strochlic reports.
SAFETY FIRST

After photos of gun activists carrying assault weapons in the baby-clothes section of a Target store in Texas surfaced, and a loaded handgun was found in the toy section in a South Carolina location, the company officially asked customers Wednesday not to bring guns into the stores. "This is a complicated issue, but it boils down to a simple belief: Bringing firearms to Target creates an environment that is at odds with the family-friendly shopping and work experience we strive to create," said interim CEO John Mulligan. Mulligan even addressed the fact that in many open-carry states, it is legal to bring guns into stores, saying it is asking customers "even in communities where it is permitted by law."

NOT SO FAST
Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders may be the one politician who can derail the Democrats' Chosen One. Sanders tells David Freedlander that he is "giving serious thought" to running for president in 2016. But even if he doesn't, his workingman approach to economics and socialist ideals will seriously challenge Hillary Clinton's attempts to plead poverty and win the masses.
OH MON DIEU

Nicolas Sarkozy, the former president of France, says that he is "deeply shocked" by the corruption investigation announced Wednesday. In what was supposed to be his first major broadcast interview since his 2012 loss, Sarko denied that he broke the law. "I have never committed any act contrary to the values of the republic or the rule of law," he said. Sarkozy has been accused of trying to obtain information from a judge about investigations, among them the accusation that he took as much as €50 million in illegal campaign donations from Muammar Gaddafi in 2007. Sarkozy was questioned for 15 hours by police on Tuesday, which was the first time a former French president had been detained by the authorities. He had been rumored to be seeking a comeback in the 2017 election.

SHARING ECONOMY
It may be illegal in big cities, but Airbnb is having a major effect on millions. April Sises writes that when tenants can make a ton of money by renting out their homes, landlords and property owners will squeeze renters for more. Airbnb isn't sharing what's valuable–it's making the valuable even more expensive.
