Cheat Sheet - Are These the Next Five to Die in Gaza?

July 17, 2014
MISERABLE
On Wednesday, four Palestinian children were killed by an Israeli strike while playing soccer on a beach. As Gaza reels from that incident, Dean Obeidallah talks to five young Palestinians about growing up under the constant threat of death.
NO PROGRESS

Despite being the developed world's worst polluter per person, Australia is now set to get rid of its two-year-old carbon tax. The Australian Senate voted 39-32 to repeal the tax. Repealing the tax was one of the central planks of the business-friendly Liberal-National coalition that put Prime Minister Tony Abbott in charge. The tax charged the 348 highest polluters in the country for every ton of greenhouse gas. Abbott plans to instead create a multibillion-dollar fund paid for by taxpayers that will pay companies to reduce emissions and use cleaner energy.

HEROES
In 2006, a Chevy Cobalt with a defective ignition switch killed two teenage Wisconsin girls. Michael Daly reports on the family's anger when they found out about the GM coverup, as well as the Wisconsin police who discovered the lethal flaw long before it was a national scandal.
HOT POTATO
After confronting a Bush administration official about how all the U.S. blood and treasure spent in Iraq was benefiting Iran, Christopher Dickey was told, "If you really want to fuck Iran, let 'em have Iraq." Now, as Iraq spirals out of control, Dickey argues that it's time the Iraqi Pottery Barn rule—'You break it, you pay a trillion dollars for it'—is applied to someone else.
SEARCH IS ON

Lois Lerner isn't escaping public or federal scrutiny any time soon. On Wednesday, the Department of Justice announced that it would investigate the circumstances behind the disappearance of her missing Internal Revenue Service emails. The probe is part of a larger investigation into improper IRS scrutiny of Tea Party groups. The IRS has claimed that certain Lerner emails from 2011 vanished when her computer crashed. At that time, Lerner headed the section of the IRS that oversaw tax-exempt organizations. "The IRS investigation was launched without hesitation and immediately after Ms. Lerner publicly acknowledged the potential misconduct," a DoJ spokeswoman said.
