Cheat Sheet - Mississippi Tea Party Ready to Bully Black Voters

Read This, Skip That ....

June 24, 2014
UGLY

Mississippi's brutal Republican primary for U.S. Senate has led one candidate's campaign to try to persuade black Democrats to potentially break the law—and the other to lie in wait to bust them. Ben Jacobs reports on a state law that says a person cannot vote in a primary if he doesn't intend to vote for the nominee. Embattled Republican Thad Cochran is asking black Democrats to support him against Tea Partier Chris McDaniel, whose campaign is ready to deploy poll watchers to intimidate black voters.

DON'T GO THERE

President Obama is moving to send 300 special operators to Iraq, but Jacob Siegel reports that veteran U.S. commandos doubt how effective such a move would be. A former CIA officer and special operator said, "It's not a good thing or a bad thing, it's a no thing. These guys are being given an impossible mission." Without a clear, strategic goal, the elite troops may ultimately just create more problems for the U.S. and Iraq.

NOT SO MELLOW

Researchers at the Institute of Psychiatry at King's College London have found further evidence of a connection between smoking marijuana and having schizophrenia. There is already research that people who smoke pot are twice as likely to have schizophrenia. But this study has clarified the link, and the relationship doesn't appear to be causal. Rather, there may be an underling genetic connection. After studying the genetic profile of more than 2,000 participants, study leader Robert Power said their research "suggests that there is likely to be an association in the other direction as well—that a predisposition to schizophrenia also increases your likelihood of cannabis use." Those with a genetic predisposition for schizophrenia were more likely to smoke pot and to use it in greater amounts than those without risk genes. Power said the study "highlights the complex interactions between genes and environments."

HORRIFYING

Witnesses in Nigeria say more than 60 women and girls and 31 boys were abducted from villages in the northeast of the country. One witness, who is a member of an anti-Boko Haram group, said the abductions occurred Saturday following an attack in which four villagers were killed. Islamist extremists have been blamed for the kidnapping. The report of the kidnappings came from Kummabza, which is 95 miles from Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state. A councilor from the village's Damboa local government told the Associated Press the abductions had occurred, but also said he was not authorized to give information to reporters. Security forces have denied the kidnapping, and the Associated Press reports that there is not a safe way to verify the reports. The Nigerian government has been criticized as being slow to react to the abduction of the more than 200 schoolgirls.

SPLIT DECISION

Former News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks was cleared Tuesday of all charges in the phone hacking scandal that rocked the U.K. On the 138th day of the trial, a jury found her not guilty of conspiracy to hack voicemails, two counts of conspiracy to pay public officials, and two counts of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. Brooks was reportedly so overcome with emotion she had to be taken away by the court matron. Former News of the World editor Andrew Coulson will not be able to join Brooks' relief. He was found guilty of conspiracy to intercept voicemails.
