Scientists discover how to turn light into matter after 80-year quest

Posted: 18 May 2014 01:42 PM PDT

Physicists have discovered how to create matter from light -- a feat thought impossible when the idea was first theorized 80 years ago. In just one day over several cups of coffee in a tiny office, three physicists worked out a relatively simple way to physically prove a theory first devised by scientists Breit and Wheeler in 1934. Breit and Wheeler suggested that it should be possible to turn light into matter by smashing together only two particles of light (photons), to create an electron and a positron -- the simplest method of turning light into matter ever predicted. The calculation was found to be theoretically sound, but Breit and Wheeler said that they never expected anybody to physically demonstrate their prediction.

Herpes-loaded stem cells used to kill brain tumors

Posted: 16 May 2014 05:33 PM PDT

A potential solution for how to more effectively kill tumor cells using cancer-killing viruses has been discovered by researchers. The investigators report that trapping virus-loaded stem cells in a gel and applying them to tumors significantly improved survival in mice with glioblastoma multiform, the most common brain tumor in human adults and also the most difficult to treat.

Ground breaking hip and stem cell surgery completed using 3D-printed implant

Posted: 16 May 2014 05:33 PM PDT

Doctors and scientists have completed their first hip surgery with a 3D-printed implant and bone stem cell graft. The 3D printed hip, made from titanium, was designed using the patient's CT scan and CAD CAM (computer aided design and computer aided manufacturing) technology, meaning it was designed to the patient's exact specifications and measurements. The implant will provide a new socket for the ball of the femur bone to enter. Behind the implant and between the pelvis, doctors have inserted a graft containing bone stem cells.

West Antarctic Ice Sheet collapse is under way

Posted: 15 May 2014 06:09 AM PDT

Models using detailed topographic maps show that the collapse of the West Antarctic ice sheet has begun. Fast-moving Thwaites Glacier, which acts as a linchpin on the rest of the ice sheet, will likely disappear in a matter of centuries.

E-cigarettes expose people to more than harmless vapor, should be regulated

Posted: 13 May 2014 08:36 AM PDT

Industry claims about e-cigarette devices are unsupported by evidence, including claims that e-cigarettes help smokers quit, concludes a major scientific review of research. The devices, which are rapidly gaining a foothold particularly among youth, are marketed as a healthier alternative to tobacco smoking, an effective tool to stop smoking, and as a way to circumvent smoke-free laws by allowing users to "smoke anywhere." Often the ads stress that e-cigarettes produce only "harmless water vapor." But scientists found that e-cigarette use is associated with significantly lower odds of quitting cigarettes. They also found that e-cigarette emissions "are not merely 'harmless water vapor,' as is frequently claimed, and can be a source of indoor air pollution."
