Cheat Sheet - The Botched Hunt for Malaysian Airlines Flight 370

March 12, 2014
WHAT A MESS

How does an airplane the size of a skyscraper go missing for five days? With all of the contradictions and misinformation coming out of the search for the missing Malaysian Airlines Flight 370, it would be farcical were it not for the tragedy unfolding. Even worse, reports Clive Irving, the man allegedly in charge of the search and rescue mission, Malaysian Air Force Chief General Rodzali Daud, is blowing it.

TRY ME

The Central Intelligence Agency is facing a firestorm for allegedly hacking into Senate computers during an investigation of torture. Tuesday, CIA Driector John Brennan said President Obama "can ask me to stay or to go." Eli Lake writes this kind of talk amounts to a kind of dare from a man entrusted with secrets on everything from drones to cyberespionage.

CAR TROUBLE

All eyes are on General Motors. The Detroit-based automaker's recall of 1.6 million vehicles last month has prompted federal prosecutors to investigate whether GM broke the law by failing to disclose vehicle flaws—such as the Chevrolet Cobalt's defective ignition switches, which have been linked to 31 accidents and 13 deaths—in a timely matter. Additionally, a Senate panel overseeing consumer-product safety plans to hold hearings for GM in the coming weeks, and a separate House committee plans to conduct its own investigation into the company's widespread vehicle recalls. GM isn't the first car company to come under federal scrutiny. The Justice Department is discussing a settlement to a four-year investigation into Toyota's multimillion-vehicle recalls in 2009 and 2010.

CASH MONEY

Rand Paul has won the CPAC presidential straw poll two years in a row and early primary polls put him on top in New Hampshire and Iowa. Now that Chris Christie is mired in scandal, the Kentucky Republican appears to be the 2016 frontrunner. But, asks David Freedlander, can he win over the wolves of Wall Street?

GENEROUS GUY

Facing an economy where workers' wages have stagnated while corporate profits have taken off, President Obama will unveil a plan to force businesses to pay more overtime to millions of employees. On Thursday, he will order the Labor Department to require overtime pay for millions of fast-food managers, loan officers, computer technicians, and others who companies now classify as "executive or professional" to avoid paying overtime. Obama's move comes after Republicans in Congress have vowed to fight his proposal to raise the federal minimum wage. Business groups won a major victory in 2004 when they persuaded President George W. Bush to give them more freedom on exempting salaried workers.
