UP TO SPEED

There goes another glass ceiling. General Motors' board of directors on Tuesday elected Mary Barra to become CEO—the first woman to lead GM or a major automaker ever. Barra joined GM at 18, rising through the ranks to become heir apparent as executive vice president. The Daily Beast's Will O'Connor on what we know about Barra.

Too Hot for the PRC

Good luck talking about Nelson Mandela without mentioning democracy. The Chinese government on Tuesday issued censorship orders to media ahead of Mandela's funeral prohibiting mentions of self-government or human rights. "All posts and comments on Weibo and blogs that take advantage of the funeral of Mandela to attack our political systems and state leaders must be deleted immediately," the order said. Also banned: anything about the Dalai Lama, Tibet, or Taiwan.

POOR TASTE

Oh President Obama. No. The president took a smiling selfie with British Prime Minister David Cameron and Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt at Nelson Mandela's memorial on Tuesday, and the Internet is not happy. Neither, for that matter, was Michelle Obama. In fairness to Obama, Tuesday's memorial was considered a celebration of Mandela's life, including music and dancing. And he was not the only one taking selfies: former President George W. Bush took one with Bono. But fairness is not the Internet's forte. Twitter pretty much exploded with comments like "tacky," "not appropriate," "the worst thing ever"—and the Tumblr "Selfies at Funerals" said "our work here is done." Did Obama finally learn the lesson that selfies will always be on the wrong side of history?

SNOW DAY

Oh the weather outside is frightful … A snowstorm slammed the northeast on Tuesday, causing flights to be delayed up to five hours at some airports. And Washington D.C. is virtually shut down (for a real reason this time), although the House of Representatives and the Supreme Court stayed open. The storm is considered a "parting shot" of two storms that paralyzed much of the country over the past five days, and now has caused snowfall from Boston to Washington on Tuesday morning, with two to five inches expected in most places. In Baltimore, two people were killed when an SUV collided with a commuter train. In New York, LaGuardia Airport had five-hours delays and Newark Airport reported five-and-a-half-hour delays. In Philadelphia, four-hour delays were recorded.

EYE IN THE SKY

On Tuesday, the tiny town Deer Trail, Colorado, (population: 532) was poised to vote on an ordinance that would legalize drone-hunting licenses and allocate "bounties" for people who shoot down the aircrafts—until a citizen protest tossed the issue to district court. The Daily Beast's Abby Haglage on the "courageous patriot" behind the bill.
