MAN'S WORST FRIEND

In the first case involving a non-human demanding legal rights under common law, four chimpanzees are fighting this week for to retire to sanctuaries. The Nonhuman Rights Project is acting on behalf of the chimps, and is accusing owners, some who have rescued the animals, of keeping the chimps against their will. If the cases filed by the NhRP are successful, what other pets will be next? The Daily Beast's Jacqui Goddard reports.

BAH HUMBUG

This is the real War on Christmas. Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker's "campaign team" sent an email over the weekend asking donors to send donations instead of buying their children holiday gifts. Lovely. "Instead of venturing into the cold this Black Friday, stay in and give your children a gift that will keep on giving … Donate $5, $10 or $25 to help Governor Walker get re-elected and save your children from a future of double-digit tax increases and billion-dollar deficits." The email also notes that "electronics or toys" will become outdated or break, but contributing to Walker's campaign will help create a "Wisconsin as great as the one [Walker] grew up in." Is this part of a master plan to get on Jimmy Kimmel when they film the looks on children's faces on Christmas morning with no presents?

LONG OVERDUE

Pope Francis addressed sex abuse by the clergy for the first time yesterday in a meeting with Dutch bishops. But the popular pope did not offer the straightforward apology for rampant child abuse by Catholic priests many want to hear. The Daily Beast's Barbie Latza Nadeau asks: why won't he stop swerving and do the right thing?

SICK

A fourth case of meningococcal disease that leads to meningitis has been confirmed at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The disease, which causes infections in the bloodstream and meningitis, has led the university to stop all fraternity events as well as parties. The bacteria can cause fever, headaches, rash and increased sensitivity. One of the people infected with the disease had to have both feet amputated. All four individuals were infected last month, and the potential number of people exposed is now at 500. Students in dormitories are especially prone, and UCSB has said it is increasing cleanings in residence halls and sports facilities.

MOTOR CITY

U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Steven Rhodes ruled Tuesday that Detroit is eligible for bankruptcy, the largest municipal filing in history. In the historic ruling, Rhodes said pensions can be cut as part of Detroit's bankruptcy—a move that the city's unions are likely to appeal. In the bitter nine-day court battle leading up to Rhodes's ruling, emergency city manager Kevyn Orr has argued that the city's $18 billion debt—as well as its long-term liabilities—must be reduced to help the city move out of bankruptcy.
