CLASSIC

In the days after President Kennedy's assassination, the legendary columnist Jimmy Breslin set the standard for literary journalism written in the wake of tragedy. His columns for the New York Herald Tribune became instant classics, precisely because he chose to cover the unexpected human stories not at the heart, but on the periphery, of the breaking news. Published here with Breslin's permission are two of his iconic columns from those tumultuous days.

DEADLY TYPHOON

The death toll from the monster typhoon—"Yolanda"— that ripped through the Philippines on November 8 surged to 5,000 on Friday, a total that officials fear will continue to rise. As of Thursday, the number was hovering around 4,000. Packing winds up to 147 mph, the typhoon brought severe damage to six islands in the Philippines, forcing close to 1 million people to evacuate. Thirteen governments, including the United States, are aiding in the effort to provide food and clean water for the estimated 3 million people still displaced by the storm.

SELFIE NATION

No surprise here: women are dominating the photo-sharing app Snapchat, just as they dominate Instagram, Pinterest, and other social media sites. Roughly 70 percent of users are female, though the company has not disclosed its total number of users. We only know that 400 million self-destructing photos and videos are exchanged per day. Lest the 70 percent figure perpetuate the stereotype that impulsive teenage girls are Snapchatting pictures of their lady bits to eager young men, remember that the company has yet to release any other demographics.

ACCIDENT

A shopping mall roof collapsed Thursday night in Riga, Latvia, killing 45 people and trapping hundreds more inside. The collapse took place about 5:45 p.m., when the residential mall was packed with after-work shoppers. At least three of the casualties were firefighters who had responded to the scene and were caught in a secondary collapse. Twenty-eight people are now hospitalized, including 10 firefighters. News reports said a garden was being constructed on the roof of the mall, and the soil from the project might have triggered the first collapse. Riga, located in the Gulf of Riga near Finland and Sweden, is the largest city and seaport in the Baltic region.
