In Memoriam

After a gunman opened fire at Building 197 in Washington, D.C.'s Navy Yard on Monday, the nation is mourning yet another mass shooting. Here's what we know about the 12 people who were killed.

TROUBLING

The gunman suspected of killing 12 at the Washington Navy Yard on Monday had been plagued with behavioral issues and mental-health problems for years and was being treated by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Aaron Alexis had served in the Navy for four years, but was discharged after racking up eight to 10 conduct offenses and was described by an official as "a ne'er-do-well." Alexis reported to others he was "hearing voices," and his father told police that his son suffered from PTSD after a 2004 incident in which he shot out a man's tires in Seattle.

FRENEMIES

Don't worry, they're just pen pals. On Tuesday Iran's Foreign Ministry revealed that President Hassan Rouhani and President Obama have been in direct communication via letter, despite the two countries not having official diplomatic communication. Obama apparently sent Rouhani a congratulatory note after his election victory, which was exchanged "through current diplomatic channels."

BIG-BUCK GAMES

The once-shocking, now 16-year-old videogame series Grand Theft Auto is back, with a fifth installment released Tuesday. Called "the best plotted, most playable, character-driven, fictionally coherent entry" by The New York Times, the videogame is set in a version of Southern California and follows three controllable characters. An analyst has predicted that the new game will make $1 billion in retail sales over the next month, and others say it could sell 20 million copies by March.
