VICIOUS CYCLE

John Morse was elected president of Colorado's state Senate four months after the deadly theater shooting in Aurora and vowed to take action to keep it from happening again. Last week he lost his job when voters recalled him over his gun-control effort—just days before yet another mass shooting. In Newsweek, he says he'd do it again in a heartbeat to stop this horrible cycle.

What can happen when soldiers go rogue? The Daily Beast's Caitlin Dickson pieces together a sordid tale of drugs, guns, and a plot to overthrow the U.S. government that left two civilians dead.

FRENEMIES

Believe it? U.S. President Barack Obama and Iran's newly elected President Hassan Rouhani could meet next week at the U.N. General Assembly in New York, making another step toward easing decades of diplomatic tension as well as sanctions that have crippled the Middle Eastern nation. The two leaders have already exchanged letters, and Rouhani has shown a willingness to lead a more moderate Iran—he tweeted wishes for a blessed Rosh Hashanah earlier this month, has released political prisoners, and has condemned chemical-weapons attacks in Syria. "We must work together to end the unhealthy rivalries and interferences that fuel violence and drive us apart," Rouhani said in an op-ed for the Washington Post yesterday.

SENSELESS

Ten adults and three children were shot last night in a Chicago park, in an attack officials are calling "gang-related." A 3-year-old boy, Deonta', was shot in the head, the bullet exiting his mouth, and was the most critically injured in the group. "He didn't like haircuts because he has a big head," said a cousin. "But he is extremely smart. He didn't have that [head] for nothing." Witnesses describe about ten ambulances carrying the victims out on stretchers. Thankfully, no one was killed this time.

cleaner future

See ya, carbon. On Friday, the Obama administration is set to announce the first-ever carbon limits on new coal-fired power plants, which have been blamed for global warming and pollution. The carbon dioxide would be caught in expensive technology and buried underground, and would be an incentive to focus on cleaner energy sources. Plants already in operation won't be affected yet, but likely would be in the future, as they produce a third of the country's greenhouse-gas emissions. The regulations will be proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency by next summer.
