DEAR PRESIDENT OBAMA

Forget "credibility"; the only thing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad fears is being removed from power—something Obama doesn't dare commit to. Assad has learned from history that what doesn't kill him makes him stronger, and it's time for the United States to learn that lesson, too, writes The Daily Beast's Christopher Dickey. Plus, Nico Hines on why Britain backed out of the march to war.

Frontrunner

After a sudden, meteoric rise in the polls, Bill de Blasio is on the brink of becoming New York's next mayor. Despite a history of savvy political tactics, he's been painted as a progressive purist. What does he really believe? David Freedlander reports in Newsweek.

The bloody news from Egypt may have quieted, but the struggle for power continues. On Thursday, prominent Muslim Brotherhood leader Mohamed el-Beltagy was arrested by Egyptian authorities on counts of inciting violence, state media reported. Beltagy is the secretary-general of the Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party, and was reportedly arrested along with former labor minister Khaled al-Azhari. Beltagy's arrest was ordered in early July, but he continued to appear almost daily at the pro-Morsi protests in Cairo. His 17-year-old daughter was killed in the violence at the protest camp earlier this month.

BLACK BUDGET

Satellites aimed at Pakistan played a vital role in the hunt and capture of Osama bin Laden, according to a "black budget" revealed in Edward Snowden's latest classified document dump, this time to The Washington Post. The NSA was also able to track the calls and movements of al Qaeda operatives and linked one of the phones to the Abbottabad compound where bin Laden was shot and killed.

Hatesville

White supremacist Paul Craig Cobb is buying up property in a tiny North Dakota town with plans to transform it into a haven for white nationalists. Currently wanted in Canada on charges of promoting hatred, Cobb has settled in Leith and is using Internet ads and message boards to entice like-minded people to the area. The only problem is that Cobb's neighbors—all 24 of them—aren't having it. People have offered to buy back his properties, and Bobby Harper, the town's one black resident, says he's not going anywhere. According to Cobb, four of his brethren have now acquired land from him, but he's not sure if they're ready to move just yet.
