New research shows that our diet has a significant impact on our neurological health. But why aren't doctors acting to prevent diseases like Alzheimer's, rather than only treating them? David Perlmutter, author of the new book The Grain Brain, on the need to change our approach to healthcare.

HOLD UP

This gives a whole new meaning to the phrase "the stock market is down." The NASDAQ, the technology-savvy exchange on which the shares of Google, Apple, Microsoft, and Intel are traded, essentially went dark mid-day Thursday. Trading was suspended around 12:15 until further notice, as the exchanged cited (wait for it) technology issues. At around 1 p.m., NASDAQ released a statement saying they intend to "re-open" but that the time is still "to be determined."

EXIT

Egypt's former President Hosni Mubarak was released from prison on Thursday after a authorities declared he could no longer be legally kept behind bars. The ousted leader was reportedly flown via medical helicopter to a military hospital outside of Cairo. But the release of the old dictator is irrelevant, write The Daily Beast's Mike Giglio and Christopher Dickey.

FINALLY

Bob Filner, the embattled mayor of San Diego, has agreed to resign in a deal made with city officials Wednesday, an NBC San Diego affiliate confirmed Thursday. Officials announced Wednesday night that a deal had been struck, but the result was supposed to remain confidential until Friday afternoon. Filner is under fire for multiple sexual-harassment charges; so far 18 women have claimed he made various inapprioriate advances. The mayor underwent two weeks of behavorial therapy in hopes that the storm would blow over and had previously steadfastly refused to resign.

JUDGMENT DAY

Fomer New England Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez was indicted by a grand jury Thursday in connection with the murder of semipro football player Odin Lloyd in June. Hernandez is now being held without bail on a charge of assault and battery with intent to murder, according to a report by WCVB. In late July, police discovered a secret two-bedroom apartment—which they believe to be Hernandez's—full of ammunition and clothing linked to the murder. The former football star's lawyers remain confident that the case against him is "weak." A hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
