Don't even try to pretend you didn't care about William and Kate's baby boy: Twitter doesn't lie. According to the social-media website, the duke and duchess's newborn son was a star on Twitter on Monday, getting more than 2 million mentions. The peak came at 8:37 p.m., when Buckingham Palace announced the boy's birth, with 25,300 tweets per minute. The hashtag "#RoyalBaby" was used more than 900,000 times since the duchess was admitted to the hospital. It all started at 5:55 a.m. BST, when photographer Jesal Parshotam tweeted the exclusive that the duchess had been taken to the hospital. Catherine gave birth to a baby boy at 4:24 p.m. BST. RESIGNATION

TRAGEDY

The failure to install a system to prevent insurgents from planting roadside bombs in hundreds of locations has led to the injuries and death of several American soldiers, according to a report released Tuesday by American investigators. The report pins the blame on an Afghan contractor and his subcontractor, who have been charged with negligent homicide and fraud by the Afghan government—and one of the men is in custody. It's the first time Afghan contractors have been directly linked to American deaths. Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel told the VFW in Louisville, Kentucky, on Monday that U.S. troops are "close to the breaking point" after so many deployments.

BAD NEWS

Nine people were killed in Cairo in overnight clashes, with at least six dying at the city's main university. The six were reportedly killed near the site of a sit-in by former president Mohamed Morsi's supporters, according to Khaled el-Khateeb, who heads the Egyptian Health Ministry's emergency and intensive-care department. More than 60 have been killed since Morsi was ousted on July 3—and his party, the Muslim Brotherhood, refusing to recognize the new government, has organized rallies throughout the country. In Cairo on Monday, at least one person was killed and Egyptian state TV reported that seven Morsi supporters were arrested for possession of illegal weapons.
