It was a session that was meant to help Republicans transcend their small-tent reputation. Then a white supremacist started talking segregation and everything went into a tailspin. The Daily Beast's Caitlin Dickson reports. Plus, Michael Moynihan on the libertarian and conservative war at CPAC, Ben Jacobs interviews Rick Santorum, and more dispatches from CPAC

Green Man

Could it be true this time? President Obama announced in his weekly address on Saturday that a new energy plan could wean America off oil...by drilling for oil. The plan is to use funds from drilling on public land to fund alternative energy research, using America's current oil dependence to find better alternatives. In fact, the address was filmed at a special location to underline the importance of the plan: the president spoke from a green-energy research lab in Lemont, Illinois. "After years of talking about it, we're finally poised to take control of our energy future," he said. Let's hope it's for real this time.

Papal Priorities

Must be those Jesuit roots. On Saturday, Pope Francis gave his clearest indication yet that his papacy will be marked by a focus on austerity and social justice. "I would like a poor Church, and for the poor," he said offhand to a group of reporters. He had been explaining the origins of his papal name, which was inspired by St. Francis of Assisi, who was known for his peaceful nature and sympathy for the needy. His reign seems to be a shift from Benedict's inward-looking papacy, and he has already set a strong moral tone for what is to follow. Everyone, he said, should try to understand the Church's "journey in the world" and, most of all, seek "truth, goodness, and beauty".

Passive-Aggressive

We get it, you didn't want Dennis Rodman visiting. North Korea has test-fired a pair of missiles into its eastern waters, said a South Korean official on Saturday. It's suspected that the test is in response to ongoing U.S.-South Korea military drills—and North Korea threatened to strike both Seoul and Washington after those drills were announced. A North Korean official insisted Saturday's exercise was just a drill, but they came just one day after the U.S. announced plans to beef up its missile defense system on the West Coast in response to an increased threat from North Korea.

Syrup Seizures?

The rapper is in the hospital for the second time in a week—and was forced to respond to claims that he may be near death. The Daily Beast's Allison Samuels reports.
