TROUBLE BREWING

If the former senator is confirmed over Republican objections as Obama's new secretary of defense, it could signal the beginning of a new era in American foreign policy, says Peter Beinart. Plus, Michael Tomasky on how Hagel's nomination challenges Republicans.

I CHOOSE YOU

So long, Petraeus. President Obama will reportedly nominate John Brennan as CIA director Monday. Brennan, who currently serves as a counterterrorism aide, was considered a favorite for the position, a highly respected man devoted to his job. A veteran of the terror wars, Brennan's nomination won't thrill those in the upper echelon of the intelligence community, who say that his relationship with the president gives him a license to micromanage their work. Brennan has been the face of the administration's targeted-killing drone program—which some say should disqualify him from the position.

SHOCKING

One of the anonymous hackers who have aired the Ohio town of Steubenville's dirty laundry, without waiting for a trial, talks exclusively to Winston Ross.

TURMOIL

The five men accused of the gang rape and murder of a 23-year-old student in New Delhi arrived in court on Monday to hear the charges against them, which include charges of rape, murder, and abduction. The magistrate ordered that the court be closed to the media and cleared for the safety of the accused men. The five men have no lawyers, and members of the bar association in the Saket district, where the case is being held, have vowed not to represent them. Even so, police say they have recorded confessions, and two of the accused have offered to be informers against the other defendants in exchange for less-severe sentences. But a prosecutor said, "The five accused persons deserve not less than the death penalty."

SHE'S BACK

Hillary Clinton is set to return to work Monday for the first time since being released from the hospital. The State Department released a schedule that shows Clinton meeting with assistant secretaries Monday morning, though her most significant meetings will not come until Wednesday and Thursday, when Afghan President Hamid Karzai is in Washington. The secretary of state had been admitted to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital on Dec. 30 after doctors discovered a blood clot in her head, but she was released last Wednesday.
