Cheat Sheet - The Tea Party Wants Revenge

Cheat Sheet: Afternoon

January 03, 2013
COMEBACK

Word had it that the Tea Party was on the decline, but the Republican surrender on taxes in order to avoid the fiscal cliff is galvanizing furious grassroots members, who are vowing to root out recalcitrant GOP lawmakers in 2014—a year they say will make the 2010 wave look like a ripple. By The Daily Beast's David Freedlander.

HANGING ON

After a rough two years as House speaker, Rep. John Boehner is saddling up for two more. Despite some rumblings that, following displeasure with his fiscal-cliff negotiations, he faced some uncertainty, Boehner was handily reelected Thursday with 220 votes. Nancy Pelosi received a total of 192 votes, Eric Cantor received three, Allen West won two votes, and, despite not being a member of Congress, Colin Powell had a vote cast for him by Democratic Rep. Jim Cooper.

STOP COMPLAINING

As President Obama finally enjoys his Hawaiian vacation, some pundits are up in arms about his handling of the fiscal-cliff deal. Stop whining and leave the president alone, writes The Daily Beast's Michael Tomasky.

BACK TO SCHOOL

With the same desks, artwork, and backpacks from Sandy Hook Elementary School, classes resumed for the students at a nearby elementary school, three weeks after a gunman killed 20 students and six children. Workers spent much of the past three weeks transforming the former Chalk Hill middle school—which had closed due to declining enrollment—into an elementary school, and parents and students were allowed to come tour the school on Wednesday. But despite the best effort to keep things the same, there were some major differences: police cars were parked at the local high school, and retired principal Donna Page returned to replace Dawn Hobsprung, who was killed when she tried to stop Adam Lanza from the rampage.

TRUST ISSUES

The Federal Trade Commission today announced the end of a 20-month-long investigation into allegations that Google was using its search results to unfairly hurt its competitors and abusing its patents. In a major victory for Google, the commission found that even though the company changed its algorithm to favors its own products when listing search results, it had not violated any antitrust or anticompetition statutes. F.T.C. chairman Jon Leibowitz said that the company's actions were "not undertaken without legitimate justification." But the commission did rule that Google had misused broad patents on cellphone and wireless technology that must be licensed in order to make wireless devices like gaming consoles and smartphones. Google agreed to make that technology available to its competitors.
