UPROAR The body of a 23-year-old Indian woman who was gang-raped was flown back to New Delhi for cremation Sunday. The victim, whom police have not yet identified, died in a hospital in Singapore while being treated for severe organ failure. Hours upon returning to India, she was taken to her residence for cremation. The brutal rape at the hands of six men on a bus has shaken India, leading to protests about women’s safety in the nation and calls for harsher punishments for the perpetrators. Right now they are being held on murder charges. After mostly peaceful marches Sunday, tensions were flaring as of nightfall. CLOSING ARGUMENTS Is it almost over? Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham reportedly says that the chances of a deal passing are “exceedingly good” and "hats off to the president" on his victory. Meanwhile, the president gave his closing arguments on the fiscal-cliff fiasco in a rare appearance on Meet the Press Sunday. Obama blamed the GOP’s “trouble saying yes” for the failure to strike a deal. Referring to gun control, the president turned to Lincoln. “One of the things that you learn, having now been in this office for four years, is the old adage of Abraham Lincoln’s,” he said. “That with public opinion, there’s nothing you can’t do, and without public opinion, there’s very little you can get done in this town.” NIGHTMARE A commuter’s nightmare, with a hate-crime twist. A New York woman was arrested Saturday and charged with second-degree murder after pushing a man onto subway tracks because she thought he was Muslim or Hindu. The man was crushed by a train. “I pushed a Muslim off the train tracks because I hate Hindus and Muslims. Ever since 2001, when they put down the Twin Towers, I’ve been beating them up,” 31-year-old Erika Menendez was quoted as saying in a statement. The victim was Sunando Sen, born in India and reportedly raised Hindu. Menendez could face life in prison. | |
