Cheat Sheet - Here Comes the Obama Landslide

Today: U.S. Manufacturing Grows , Abortion at Sea , Mitt Rips Obama's Foreign Policy
Cheat Sheet: Afternoon

FORECAST

Heading into the debates, an Obama victory on Election Day is looking likely. But what if he doesn't just win, but wins huge? The Daily Beast's Michael Tomasky on the consequences of a landslide.

POSITIVE

Finally, some good news. The Institute for Supply Management's index of manufacturing activity grew this month, following three months of decline. The index came in at 51.5, beating 49.7, the consensus expectation among economists surveyed by Bloomberg. A number greater than 50 indicates overall expansion. The rest of the world's manufacturing is still shrinking: euro-zone manufacturing has contracted for 14 straight months, while China's has fallen for 11 consecutive months.

WOMEN'S HEALTH

A boat will soon dock in Morocco and offer women abortions on board. The Daily Beast's Michelle Goldberg talks to the doctor behind an effort to bring safe abortions to nations where they're curtailed.

Campaign 2012

Mitt Romney took on President Obama's Middle East policy in a Wall Street Journal editorial on Monday. The presidential hopeful said Obama "seems to be at the mercy of events rather than shaping them" and called for "a new strategy toward the Middle East." He said such a new strategy would include taking a hard line on Iran, saying, "When we say an Iranian nuclear weapons capability—and the regional instability that comes with it—is unacceptable, the ayatollahs must be made to believe us." Romney also promised that his new strategy would include "using the full spectrum of our soft power to encourage liberty and opportunity for those who have for too long known only corruption and oppression."

BUNDLE OF JOY

Will they crowdsource baby names? Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer gave birth to a boy last night, the company confirmed on Monday. Mayer's husband, Zack Bogue, posted the news on his Twitter account earlier, writing that "Mom (@marissamayer) and baby are doing great—we couldn't be more excited." This is the first child for Bogue and Mayer, who was appointed CEO of Yahoo in July after running Google for 14 years. Not long after, Mayer told Fortune that having a baby wouldn't get in the way of her new job. "My maternity leave will be a few weeks long and I'll work throughout it," she said. The remarks sparked a debate about corporate maternity-leave policies, the luxury of being able to afford around-the-clock child care, and whether or not women can "have it all."
