Rick Perry became a viral sensation when he couldn't remember the third agency he would abolish and later joked about his "brain freeze." But he's hardly the first Republican in this presidential race to stumble. From Cain's claims about his 9-9-9 tax plan to Bachmann's debt-crisis comments, The Daily Beast ranks which politicians have told the most lies and misleading statements on the campaign trail.

PENN STATE

The mother of one of the alleged victims of Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky said Friday that her son "lived in fear" after reported abuse. "I'm infuriated," said the woman, whose son is referred to in the grand-jury report as "Victim 1." "Even if I had the slightest inclination that anything inappropriate was going on it should have been reported, or at least brought to my attention." Meanwhile, assistant coach Matt McQueary has been benched from Saturday's Penn State game after receiving death threats. According to a grand-jury report, McQueary witnessed Jerry Sandusky in the shower with a 10-year-old boy, and notified head coach Joe Paterno instead of calling police. Former head coach Joe Paterno has reportedly contacted a criminal-defense attorney for his alleged role in covering up the abuse, and Sens. Pat Toomey and Bob Casey have rescinded their nomination of the legendary coach for the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

2012

The Republican candidate of the moment is ... Newt Gingrich? A new CBS poll finds that support for Gingrich has grown to 15 percent, the same level as Mitt Romney's. Herman Cain still leads, with 18 percent, but his support seems to be ebbing, especially among women and the Tea Party. Since late October, his support among women has gone from 28 percent to 15 percent, and his support among Tea Partiers has declined from 32 percent to 19 percent. Six in 10 Republican primary voters say the charges of sexual harassment against Cain make no difference to their vote, but 38 percent of women say they're less likely to support him because of the charges.

LIQUIDATION

The bankrupt broker-dealer MF Global fired its entire staff of 1,066 people, a "necessary part of the court-ordered liquidation of MF Global Inc.," said trustee James Giddens, who is in charge of overseeing the situation. The employees will be paid their salary through Nov. 15 and will have health-care coverage through the month, but none of them will receive severance pay. The trustee said he's trying to "immediately vacate" and close MF Global offices in New York City and move into cheaper office space for trustee staff as they continue the liquidation process. The company will rehire between 150 an 200 employees to help shut down the business.

PUNISHMENT

The Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday disciplined seven agency employees over their failure to stop Bernie Madoff's investment fraud—but the agency stopped short of actually firing anyone. An eighth employee also resigned before any disciplinary action could be taken. Disciplinary measures consisted of suspensions, pay cuts, and demotions; one of the most severe measures was a 30-day suspension and demotion. SEC Spokesman John Nester said the employees were not fired, because it "would have an adverse impact on the agency's work." A 2009 report indicated that the SEC had received "numerous substantive complaints" since 1992, but investigators "disregarded these concerns or relied inappropriately upon Madoff's representations and documentation in dismissing them."
