His successor will be tasked with saving the debt-racked nation from bankruptcy and negotiating the terms of an EU bailout. But the heart of Europe’s financial crisis, The Daily Beast’s Stefan Theil writes, is an unhappy union between the rich countries of the north and the poor nations to the south. Maybe it’s time for a divorce. LOVE-IN GOP presidential hopefuls Herman Cain and Newt Gingrich met Saturday night for a Texas Tea Party debate that was actually a fundraiser—and felt more like a right-wing love-in. The two camps said beforehand that they wouldn't talk about sexual-harassment accusations made against Cain, but he did take a swipe at media outlets such as Politico, which broke the harassment story last week. "There are too many people in the media who are downright dishonest," Cain said to a standing ovation. The two "debaters" barely disagreed on anything. ATTACK Three bombs exploded in Baghdad’s historic district of Shurja Sunday as shoppers were buying food for a major Muslim festival. At least six people died in the explosions and 21 more were injured. The market has been a target for civilian attacks in the past, and Interior and Defense Ministry officials reported that part of the market was ablaze. Militant violence in Baghdad has resurged in recent months with news that U.S. troops would be leaving the country by the end of the year. Many fear attacks will only worsen when the U.S. military hands over responsibility to Iraqis. OCCUPY Would an Occupy encampment in Honolulu have been too much of an eyesore for tourists? Police arrested at least six protesters after leaders of the Occupy Honolulu movement attempted to set up an encampment at a local park. The group had said earlier that it would begin to camp at the park at about its 10 p.m. closing time Saturday, and roughly 40 protesters were ready to pitch their tents when police officers arrived on the scene and ordered them to leave. Occupy Honolulu said it also stood “in solidarity” with the homeless people who are being forced to leave streets and parks as the city prepares to host the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference this week. FESTIVAL The massive hajj pilgrimage is coming to a close on the final day of the Eid al-Adha festival. The last day also marks the symbolic "stoning of the devil" ritual, in which about 2 million Muslims travel to the Saudi Arabian city of Al-Jamarat to throw pebbles at a wall representing the devil. An estimated 2.5 million worshipers have gathered at Mecca, and Saudi Arabia is deploying some 63,000 security forces to prevent violent incidents from erupting. | |
