A packed autumn of events, publications and productions for our Golden Jubilee!

50 YEARS OF PRIVATE EYE! 1961-2011

Dear Private Eye Reader,

We are celebrating 50 years of Private Eye magazine this month and we wanted to tell you about some special events and publications for this Autumn.

Issue 1300 of Private Eye magazine – on sale today - marks the official 50th anniversary of the magazine. This is a not-to-be-missed, bumper 48- page magazine and set to become a collector's item.

Also out now is Private Eye: The First 50 Years, an A-Z (price £25.00 Hardback). A lavishly illustrated, definitive history of the magazine, charting its rise from the first edition published on 25th October 1961 (300 sold) to a fortnightly readership of 700,000 today steered at the helm by Editor of 25 years, Ian Hislop.

Written by Private Eye journalist Adam Macqueen, who has been with the magazine since 1997, Adam comments: "I've been digging up stories for the Eye for fourteen years, but a lot of the stuff I found out about the mag surprised even me. When I discovered it surprised the editor too, I figured I must be doing something right."

Fans of the Eye will be able explore the original artwork of some of the finest and funniest Private Eye cartoons and 50 of the best of our trademark front covers in an exhibition: PRIVATE EYE: THE FIRST 50 YEARS at the Victoria and Albert Museum in South Kensington, London. The exhibition, which is open now, runs for three months until 8th January 2012 at the V&A's Studio Gallery. Entry is free.

Evoking the atmosphere of the magazine's Soho office, with a recreation of the editor's paper-strewn desk, the display includes some seldom-seen ephemera from the magazine's past campaigns and court cases, as well as a life-sized cut out of Tony Blair, a stuffed dog, a flying Robert Maxwell and a giant inflatable banana. We hope you will be able to visit.

This October we also have the Eye's traditional round-up of the year's best bits, the Private Eye Annual 2011. Available now in all good bookshops (price £9.99 Hardback).

We also have a 50th Anniversary mug available to order exclusively from Private Eye, at www.private-eye.co.uk.

Private Eye's famous Cartoon Christmas Cards are on sale now. Just go to www.eyexmas.co.uk.

Private Eye is celebrating a half-century, but is by no means a museum piece.

"...there's nothing like it. This is a golden era for Private Eye, not just because it is 50 years old, but because media issues on which it has long campaigned are to the fore."
