The latest in the Katie Couric horse race: The former CBS news anchor is near a deal with ABC for a syndicated daytime talk show that could pay her far more than her $15-million-a-year anchor salary, according to The Daily Beast's Howard Kurtz. Should Couric sign, she'll join powerful female journalists Barbara Walters, Diane Sawyer, and Christiane Amanpour at ABC. Expect an announcement in early June.
The United States has ordered all non-essential diplomats and their family members to leave Yemen as the country spirals into civil war. At least 72 people have died there over the past three days in confrontations between tribal fighters and government forces. On Thursday, several explosions were heard in the capital Sanaa, with the government reportedly shelling residential neighborhoods. One explosion overnight killed at least 28 people. The fighting is spreading to other parts of the country, as well. Yemen's president, Ali Abdullah Saleh, has promised three times to sign a power-transfer agreement before backing out at the last second.
Sarah Palin is confirmed to have bought a $1.695 million, 8,000-square foot home in Scottsdale, Arizona. The homewhich includes a home theater, a walk-in wine cellar, and a billiard roomis just one of several signs that Palin will, in fact, run for president in 2012. Palin has also rehired two aides to help plan political events, and she will resume making public appearances very soon, possibly this weekend.
At last, a storm system that didn't kill anyone: No deaths were reported after the fourth consecutive day of strong storms in middle America. Indian, Illinois, and Missouri all endured new tornadoes, which flipped mobile homes and tore the roofs off houses but apparently left their residents unharmed. Meanwhile, Joplin, Missouri authorities will release Thursday morning the names of missing people. Some 1,500 people are unaccounted for after Sunday's twister.
Who says house arrest can't be luxurious? Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the former IMF chief accused of sexual assault, has moved to a $50,000-a-month townhouse in the Manhattan neighborhood of TriBeCa. The three-story, 6,800-square foot home includes a home theater, gym, spa, bar, and rec room. The house is the most expensive rental in TriBeCa, according to the New York Post. Earlier this year, Alex Rodriguez and Cameron Diaz are reported to have checked it out.
