GOOGLE AND VERIFONE SAID TO BE TESTING ANDROID-DRIVEN NFC PAYMENTS

INTEL AND MCAFEE CLARIFY EMBEDDED SECURITY PLANS
Two weeks after Intel acquired security software firm McAfee, executives from both companies talked to analysts about how their combined patent portfolio will let them secure embedded and mobile devices from malware at the hardware level. First up will be "McAfee for Wind River" product, expected to be based on Wind River Linux.

INTEL COUNTERS ARM WITH MICRO SERVER CPUS
Intel announced four new x86 processors intended for the "micro server" market, with TDPs ranging from 45 Watts down to 20 Watts. Apparently meant to fend off gains by ARM Holdings licensees, they include: the Xeon E3-1260L and E3-1220L; an un-named "Sandy Bridge"-based offering due later this year; and a Atom variant planned for next year.

LINUX 2.6.38 SPEEDS GROUP SCHEDULING, VFS
Linus Torvalds announced the release of the 2.6.38 Linux kernel, featuring both an overhaul of the Virtual File System and an "automatic process grouping" patch touted as greatly improving performance. Other Linux 2.6.38 changes include support for AMD Fusion processors, AMD and Nvidia GPUs, and additional Wi-Fi chips, plus Btrfs file-system enhancements and "transparent huge-page" support for speeding database and virtualization applications.

FIRST 4G LTE PHONE DEBUTS THIS WEEK ON VERIZON
Verizon Wireless will begin selling the HTC ThunderBolt, the first smartphone to exploit its 4G LTE (long-term evolution) network, starting March 17. The ThunderBolt offers a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 8GB of internal memory and a 32GB data card, a 4.3-inch touchscreen, eight-megapixel and 1.3-megapixel cameras, and a mobile hotspot, says the carrier.

10-INCH TABLETS FROM HTC AND DELL TIPPED AS XOOM STARTS OFF SLOW
A leaked Staples training guide suggests HTC and Dell are each prepping 10-inch tablets, and Samsung is readying an 8.9-inch tablet, all running Android 3.0 "Honeycomb", while HP will offer a seven-inch WebOS tablet. Meanwhile, an analyst says early sales of the Motorola Xoom tablet have been disappointing, in large part due to the bugs and complex UI of Honeycomb.

T-MOBILE REVAMPS SIDEKICK AS SAMSUNG-BUILT ANDROID SLIDER
T-Mobile unveiled a new version of its Sidekick messaging phone featuring Android 2.2 instead of the old "Danger" operating system. The Samsung-built T-Mobile Sidekick 4G offers a 1GHz Hummingbird processor, a 3.5-inch touchscreen, HSPA+ support, a front-facing video camera, and the Sidekick-signature pop-tilt hinge for its slide out, five-row QWERTY keyboard.

NOVELL ACQUISITION DELAYED BY DOJ PATENT INVESTIGATION
Attachmate's bid to acquire enterprise software and Linux distribution firm Novell for $2.2 billion has been delayed, due to questions about the sale of 882 patents to a Microsoft-led consortium of vendors. The U.S. Department of Justice is taking longer than expected on due diligence regarding the patents, leading to investor frustration.

A POST-PC WORLD? HECK NO, SAYS RESEARCH FIRM
While Apple CEO Steve Jobs and his retinue of media followers are claiming we live in a "post-PC world," that's far from the case, according to IHS iSuppli. In fact, global PC shipments were up 14 percent last year, hitting a record level of 345.4 million units, the research firm says.

ANDROID MAKES TABLET GAINS, BUT IPAD TO STAY STRONG IN 2011, SAY STUDIES
Apple's share of the media tablet market fell to 73 percent in 4Q 2010, due to the arrival of Android tablets led by the Samsung Galaxy Tab, says IDC. Still, the iPad will maintain a 70-80 percent share in 2011, the research firm adds, while Forrester puts the figure at 80 percent, and projects that only Amazon.com could mount significant competition via a color Kindle.

OPENSUSE 11.4 TOUTED FOR PERFORMANCE BOOST, NEW ROLLING RELEASE OPTION
The Novell-backed OpenSUSE project released OpenSUSE 11.4 and launched an optional "Tumbleweed" rolling release repository. OpenSUSE 11.4 is built on Linux 2.6.37, said to make it faster and more scalable, and offers enhanced boot processes, a faster ZYpp package management system, LibreOffice 3.31, Firefox 4.0, plus updated virtualization packages.

HP'S DESKTOP PLANS FOR WEBOS COULD FLIP PC MARKET, SAY ANALYSTS
Many analysts are applauding HP's decision to place its Linux-based WebOS on all of its Windows-based PCs in 2012 as an alternative fast-boot distro, but some caution it could alienate Microsoft.
