Cheat Sheet - Welcome to Global Weirding

February 12, 2014
NEW NORMAL

Atlanta is getting crushed by the worst ice storm in 14 years while the East Coast braces for another foot of snow. Isn't the world supposed to be getting hotter though? Scott Bixby writes one blustery winter doesn't prove 97 percent of climate scientists wrong: Climate change is making weather more volatile.

GO!

Twenty-eight House Republicans voted to raise the debt ceiling Tuesday evening, joining Democrats to pass an increase with no strings attached and keep the government running until March 15, 2015. Rep. Paul Ryan was one of the large majority of Republicans who voted no. Tuesday morning, the House GOP leadership dropped its demand to restore cuts to military pensions in exchange for raising the debt ceiling.

LOONEY TOONS

Sitting behind bars and feeling pretty dumb are some of the kookiest characters from the Italian crime ring Ndrangheta, arrested on Tuesday by the FBI for a drug deal gone wrong. Their plan, which reads like something out of A Fish Called Wanda, involved attempts to smuggle cocaine first through fish and then in frozen pineapples, reports Michael Daly.

DINNER FAUX PAS?

Did he serve this with some Freedom Fries? Before a state dinner to celebrate the visit of French President Francois Hollande, President Obama declared the U.S. would crack down hard on companies that evade sanctions against Iran "like a ton of bricks." There was little uncertainty which companies Obama means, as just a week ago, a delegation of French executives went to Tehran hoping to score some business deals. The president's strident warning came as President Hollande stood looking on.

EVIDENCE

An expansive study conducted over 25 years and featuring roughly 90,000 Canadian women showed that annual mammogram screenings for women ages 40 to 59 don't reduce breast-cancer deaths, but do help uncover cases of breast cancer. "We found absolutely no benefit in terms of reduction of deaths from the use of mammography," said study leader Dr. Anthony Miller. This study is the latest to question the value of annual breast X-rays, and adds to a debate that is already incredibly heated. The study, which was published in the British Medical Journal, argued that yearly mammography instead finds small cancers that would not be dangerous if left alone.
