Impressive Unreal Engine 4 Graphics Demo 'Infiltrator' Leaks Early. This Is Next-Gen?

This is a tech demo called Infiltrator that the people at Epic Games have been showing to reporters and developers all week at the Game Developers Conference this week in San Francisco. Is it a game? Or just a way to show off what the Unreal Engine can do for next-gen video game graphics? I'm not sure.

The video was supposed to go live everywhere at noon ET today, but, as you can see, it leaked early. We'll have more on this and Epic's other GDC 2013 showpieces in the next hour or so.

Epic is the studio behind the Unreal Engines, which power many of the industry's top games, including the Mass Effect series and the Batman Arkham games. Epic also makes Gears of War and Infinity Blade, pushing their own engines to the limit.

UPDATE: Mark Rein, vp at Epic and ultimate Unreal Engine pitchman, delivers the specs:

UPDATE 2: Our own Kirk Hamilton, who saw the demo, writes: Epic's presenters were sure to demonstrate that the entire thing was running in-engine, and point out that in the later, more open scenes, the mountains in the distance were all modeled, not painted. The demo was running on a GTX 680, and looked pretty snazzy. When asked if, as was rumored with that impressive modified-UE3 'Samaritan' demo shown at the last couple of GDCs, this demo was intended to be a real game, Rein said it was for demo purposes only.

(Edit: We've tweaked the language on that last sentence so as not to give the impression that Epic said that Samaritan was supposed to be a game.)

The Year's Best Crossover Came In The NHL

The Year's Best Crossover Came In The NHL

Picking a "best hockey player in the world" is a fool's errand. We anoint an Alex Ovechkin, who seems determined to prove us wrong. We back one or another Penguin, when's it not even clear which is the best on his own team. We even, for a feverish couple of weeks, decide on Claude Giroux; whoops. But you can't ever really go wrong picking Pavel Datsyuk, who at times looks like he's playing a completely different sport.

In the first period of Detroit's 2-0 loss at San Jose, Datsyuk broke Logan Couture's ankles. Just straight up shattered them, injuring HP Pavilion spectators with flying bone fragments. Ground them into dust, to bake into his bread. You don't tug on Superman's cape, not even as he's skating past your crumpled heap.

H/t to, um, Logan Couture:
