MUST READS FROM ALL OVER

INTERVENTION
1. U.S. and U.K. Fire Libya Missiles

The United States and Britain fired the opening volley against Muammar
Gaddafi's air defenses, launching more than 110 Tomahawk missiles at the
Libyan ruler's air defense site, while French planes attacked
pro-Gaddafi forces that were moving against Benghazi. State TV says
there were 150 people wounded and 48 killed in the attacks, but the
number hasn't been confirmed. The air assault may already be affecting
the momentum of the rebellion: Rebel forces are now heading from
Benghazi to the town of Ajdabiya, which they lost to Gaddafi's forces
earlier. Gaddafi denounced the attacks, calling them a "second Crusader
war" and vowing "We will not leave our land and we will liberate it."
The African Union, Russia, and China have urged everyone to stop
fighting, while Obama, speaking from Brazil, said, "We cannot stand idly
by when a tyrant tells his people there will be no mercy." As the
airstrikes hit, Babak Dehghanpisheh reports that Libyan residents are
fleeing their homes with just the clothes on their backs—and some of
them are condemning the actions.

HOPE
2. Japan Sees Progress at Nuke Plant

Japan's race to cool nuclear reactors and restore power to its plants is
slowly paying off: Engineers renewed power to cooling pumps at two
Fukushima Daiichi buildings, and other workers have at last stabilized
the complex's most toxic No.3 reactor after flooding it with seawater
for hours. The technique seems to be working and has significantly
reduced radiation levels at the plant. Engineers said they hoped to have
power connected to the remaining reactor buildings by Sunday or early
Monday. Partially restored power and a stabilized reactor are signs that
workers are finally making headway in a weeklong battle to prevent more
radiation leakage from the plant, which has been on the edge of meltdown
since the earthquake and tsunami struck. Many U.S. experts believe that
the full restoration of power at Fukushima will be a major turning point
in Japan's battle to quell the nuclear crisis. However, the issue of
radiation being detected in food and water is a developing threat.

FALLOUT
3. WikiLeaks Cables Force Resignation

Is Julian Assange smiling? WikiLeaks has claimed its first high-ranking
U.S. diplomatic casualty. Carlos Pascual, the country's ambassador to
Mexico, has stepped down amid pressure from Mexican President Felipe
Calderon, who was infuriated by critical comments of the Mexican
government's anti-drug fight that were published in the WikiLeaks
documents. Calderon has publicly lashed out at Pascual, telling The
Washington Post that he was angered by the U.S. ambassador's description
of the Mexican army in the diplomatic cables as "risk-averse". He also
cited U.S. attempts to play Mexican agencies off against one another in
the drug fight. Pascual has worked for the State Department and U.S.
Agency for International Development for 23 years and has been stationed
in Mexico for 19 months. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in a
statement Saturday that she accepted Pascual's resignation "with great
regret".

AMAZING
4. Miracle Rescue in Japan Rubble

What a story: Nine days after the 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami
hit Japan, rescuers found a 16-year-old boy on the roof of his house in
the devastated city of Ishinomaki, yelling for help. He led them inside
to his 80-year-old grandmother. Both were airlifted to a nearby
hospital. Meanwhile, the official death toll rose to 8,133, with 12,272
people still missing. As many as 15,000 people may have been killed in
the Miyagi prefecture. It looks likely that the death toll will top
20,000.

DANGERS OF COAL
5. Mine Explosion Rocks Pakistan

And now a disaster has hit Pakistan: seven coal miners were killed by a
methane gas explosion in the southwestern Pakistani province of
Balochistan on Sunday, a government official reported to CNN. Chief
Inspector of Mines Muhammed Iftikhar said 43 miners are still missing,
adding "I fear they might be dead considering the depth of the mine." He
confirmed that a rescue team has been searching for trapped miners, and
that the explosion blast through six mud-walled rooms near the coal
mine.
