CHEAT SHEET
MUST READS FROM ALL OVER

EXCLUSIVE
1. The Night the Serial Killer Called

Amber Lynn Costello's troubled life ended at the hands of the suspected
Long Island serial killer. In this week's Newsweek, her roommate speaks
for the first time to Christine Pelisek about the calls Costello
received the night she disappeared—from a high-paying stranger "she felt
comfortable with"—her long history of drug use, and why her family never
reported her as missing.

NATURAL DISASTER
2. Deadly Twisters Sweep Across U.S.

After terrorizing the Midwest, a deadly set of storms whipped its way up
to North Carolina on Saturday, bringing the system's three-day death
total to at least 30. In North Carolina alone, 10 people have been
reported dead as mobile homes were crushed, roofs blown off, and power
lines zapped. "More than likely we had eight tornadoes in North
Carolina," said a Raleigh meteorologist. Overall, the National Weather
Service reported more than 100 twisters across the region. Other deaths
were reported in Virginia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Oklahoma.

LIBYA
3. Rebels Say They're Being Armed

Libyan rebels in Benghazi say they have begun receiving arms from
abroad, but refused to say who was sending them. Asked whether any arms
shipments had arrived yet, the rebels' Col. Ahmed Bani smiled but said,
"I didn't quite confirm it." National Transitional Council spokesman
Mustafa Gheriani was equally coy when he said the opposition group had
opened "professional training centers" and winked broadly twice when
asked if he meant military training centers. But the Emir of Qatar,
Sheik Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani, tipped his hand when he told CNN that
deliveries of antitank weapons may have already reached the rebels. In a
meeting with allies in Qatar last week, Italy also said arms shipments
would be justified, but stopped short of confirming they would be sent.
The possible arms shipments come as Gaddafi's forces continue their
siege of Misrata, using ground-to-ground rockets and cluster bombs that
have been banned by much of the world.

OPTIMISTIC
4. Japan Nuke Crisis 'Over in Nine Months'

Responding to pressure from Japan's government to release a timeline for
the nuclear crisis, Tokyo Electric Power Company said it plans to reduce
radiation leaks in three months and to cool the reactors within nine
months. The utility also said it plans to cover the reactor building.
Tsunehisa Katsumata, the chairman of Tepco, said putting the plant in
"cold shutdown" would allow the tens of thousands of families evacuated
from the area to return home as soon as possible. Still, it isn't clear
that the nine-month timetable is realistic; high radiation levels have
prevented workers from entering the reactor since the crisis began after
the March 11 earthquakes. On Sunday, Tepco will send remote-controlled
robots into one of the reactors to assess the situation. The
announcement comes after radiation levels in the Pacific shot up to
6,500 times the legal limit, an increase from 1,100 times a day earlier.

FRACK
5. Carcinogens Injected Into Wells: Report

This could damage President Obama's push for greater use of natural gas
as an alternative to oil: A report issued late Saturday by Congressional
Democrats has found that the process of tapping into large reserves of
natural gas—known has hydraulic fracturing or "fracking"—involves
injecting hazardous chemicals into wells. Democrats on the House Energy
and Commerce committee said their report was the first comprehensive
national inventory of chemicals used by companies that engage in the
practice. The report says that between 2005 and 2009, more than a dozen
leading energy companies have injected hundreds of millions of gallons
of drilling fluids containing possibly carcinogenic compounds, including
methanol, benzene, sulfuric acid, and lead. Some ingredients mixed into
the hydraulic fracturing fluids were common and generally harmless, like
salt and citric acid. Others were unexpected, like instant coffee and
walnut hulls, the report added. But many ingredients were "extremely
toxic."
