Sex Sells

Alissa Nutting's 'Tampa' takes inspiration from true-crime stories of seductive teachers and their teen conquests to craft the tale of an all-American sociopath. Jessica Grose on why the familiar narrative feels fresh.

MADIBA

While South African legend Nelson Mandela is in the hospital, his family is trying to make the best of things. That includes, apparently, meeting President Obama during his tour of Senegal, South Africa, and Tanzania. Because the former president of South Africa is in critical condition, Obama will not be visiting Mandela himself. But the president will meet with the current South African President, Jacob Zuma in Pretoria and will visit Robben Island, where Mandela was held captive for 18 years, this weekend.

Let's Be Friends

The retail giant launched a $3 million campaign, 'The Real Walmart,' to convince us it's a kindhearted company. Winston Ross isn't convinced.

FIGHTIN' WORDS

Michael Bloomberg may need to work a little on his tact. The New York City mayor said during his weekly radio appearance on Friday that police "disproportionately stop whites too much and minorities too little" compared to descriptions of murder suspects. The mayor has been under fire lately for his police stop-and-frisk policies, which many allege are discriminatory against minorities. The comments were made the day after city officials voted to create a police inspector general and to overhaul the department's racial profiling. Not your best timing, Mike.

CURED?

Could there be a cure for type 1 diabetes? It looks like we're headed in that direction. A "reverse vaccine" that targets the cells that attack insulin producers seems to have passed its first test in humans. In type 1 diabetes, the immune system typically attacks insulin-producing cells for reasons scientists still don't quite understand. So what makes the vaccine a reversal? Unlike normal vaccines, which train the immune system to destroy a certain kind of cell, this treatment instead suppresses immune cells to keep them from doing the same thing. Experts say the therapy needs to undergo much more testing before it's put on the market. But it's an exciting step.
